Does the bitter apple spray really work? Hi. I've just noticed lately that my guy has been chewing on more and more things.. He's just over a year now. He did a few things as a puppy but I thought we were getting off pretty good with very little things like that being done. But now, I've noticed more and more. A cedar chest that is sentimental, he's worked on the corner of that and now noticed that he's been chewing on my kitchen chair legs. I love him to death and dont ever want to part w him. But I don't want my house to go to the dogs either and not be able to have anything. From experience anyone, does that bitter apple spray from walmart really work? |
In my experience, it works in direct inverse proportion to their desire to chew on whatever you spray it on. I have had it work great on some things but others, they must find so irresistible they go ahead and chew despite the horrible taste. I did not get mine at Walmart, ordered from some online company. But I think they are all about the same ingredients. |
I also didn't get mine from Walmart, but from an online company. Mine has always totally worked. They have both the bitter apple spray and a bitter apple gel. I have never used the gel, but just spray whatever i don't want bothered. Hope that helps! And goodluck! :) |
Try putting clear stick deodorant on things you cherish. You will also have to watch him like a hawk. How old is he? Is he teething? The bitter apple dries and has to be reapplied. It works with some dogs and not others. It really depends on their desire to chew. Try giving him bully sticks to chew on. Replace the things you cherish with things he'll cherish more to satisfy his desire to chew. |
It has worked for me when wet, but not so much after it dries. |
he is 1yr three months so he;s over the teething. He has toys, but maybe he's bored with what he has. Idont know. Don't really want to do the deoderant thing because I read some where I think that deoderant can kill them or be really harmful or something about deoderant I read. Maybe the gel would last longer? I wonder? |
I tried it with Gypsy. She seemed to like the taste of it. We used Dawn liquid detergent with the results a little better. |
My Golden would actually chew more with the bitter apple- she liked the flavor. It has no effect on Rhett and Scarlett. What I have found that works well is clear deodorant on wood. Even when it's dry, it still leaves a bad taste in their mouth. I haven't noticed any ill effects on mine- the smell alone keeps them away from the wood. |
I have found that the ONLY thing that will deter my boys from chewing is by spraying alum dissolved in warm water on the object of desire. Sometimes I'll sprinkle some of the alum crystals on things like their potty pads to keep them from shredding them. It is food grade (used in pickling) and can be found in the spice aisle at the grocery store. |
I just used some yesterday on my molding and the little stinkers went nuts licking it off! What the! |
Exceptionally well, though you need to do every other day (on whatever it is they are chewing until they believe it will always taste that way). When I first tried it they'd quit for a day or two and then try it again and of course since I didn't keep up on it, they return to chewing. So every other day for a couple weeks and they'll eventually give up. The bitter apple doesn't evaporate quickly like the other anti-chew stuff...but it's not a one shot deal. Kendra |
The bitter apple worked but I also moved the piece of furniture (an antique secretary) to an unbusy part of the house. Ziva(18 months now) really hates to be scolded so she has not chewed anything since then(9 months). I did make a big fuss over it, and "cried" noisily...She does mutilate a baby chew toy at least every week. |
There are a small percentage of dogs who actually like the taste of Bitter Apple (used to work in a pet store, sold the stuff). It works on some dogs great. Others, eh. I found mixing a bit of tobasco sauce with water and putting it in a spray bottle to spray on my lower cabinets worked with all of my dogs over the years. |
