Retractable Leash and harness recommendations? I've been looking for a harness and retractable leash for my new girl. The harnesses I'm really interested in are Puppia brand. (Type A) Does anyone have one of these, and how do you like it? I like the plack polka dot one, and the pink or blue spring ones. Then I'd like to get a nice retractable leash for romps in the park or woods. She's about 12 pounds. I'm thinking of just getting a neutral leash, like black with a cute design on it or something. If I get too many girly things my Husband will never be seen with us for a walk, Lol. |
After having a few retractable leashes snap on us in puppyhood, I never bought another one. I never use anything but a leather leash. Harnesses - I just like step-in nylons harnesses, but I've been eyeing the silk harnesses made by Chattiesmom. |
I meant black polka dot! oops. :p I don't use retractable leashes with my big dogs, but I'd like one for Annie. I think it would be easier because it's a pain to carry my two long leashes, and if we let them off leash we are stuck holding them. There's gotta be a dependable retractable one out there... hopefully someone can recommend one. |
I typically don't like retractables for most things, but I think they are GREAT when it comes to hiking, and big fields and open spaces in public places to give them more freedom... I really like the ones they sell at Walmart. They have always worked really well for us, and my boy is also bigger at 15lbs. And the handle is not huge and heavy like lots of them are. They're also some of the cheapest I've found around that are of good quality. Walmart.com: Flexi Lead 16' Retractable Leash for Dogs up to 44 lbs.: Dogs Flexi is the best brand, IMO. There at 26 foot ones out there too for more money. I currently have a 16ft one for Jackson but am looking for a 26ft one. I have a 50ft rope lead for when we go to the beaches, etc, where there's not many people so he has a ton of freedom. But I love the retractable for places where there is more people so I can easily bring him back in, and not disturb other people, but still give him some more freedom. At stores, and regular walks, etc, we use a regular 6 foot nylon leash. Edit, just found this one: http://store.yahoo.com/pet-guys/-047181-cflong1.html I'm gonna purchase it because it's the cheapest I've found for a 26 foot one. :) |

Thank you for your suggestion! I would also be using it in the same instances, I already have a regular leash for her. We also go to families houses with big back yards and no fence, my big dogs will stay wherever we tell them to, with Annie I want to let her have some space, butwouldn't want her to get too far away. Not bad prices on those either! Thanks |
I use the silk harnesses from chattiesmom and I LOVE LOVE LOVE them! they never mess up their hair and she has the cutest colors! |
PS- meant to say... I LOVE Jackson's puppia harnesses. He's got 2 Puppia's, and one look-a-like Puppia, lol. They work great. They seem comfy, he doesn't mind wearing them, they dry so fast, great for the outdoors, etc! Highly recommend them. Check ebay, you can get them for $18 free shipping. |
I also recommend Flexi retractables. I would not use any other brand. Flexi is made in Germany, good stuff. Don't buy the cheap ones at Ross for 9.99 they are all made in China, not good quality. I got my 26' Flexi from Amazon for about the price that Brit posted. They are expensive at Petco, about $30. Harnesses, I love my buddy belt. It's super easy to adjust sizing if they are wearing a coat or sweater in the winter, as simple as loosening or tightening your own belt, you don't have to mess with the sliding buckles or have a "winter" and "summer" harness. |
I bought the girls puppia Butter cup step in harnesses it has a velcro closer and a plastic closer with 2 D rings for the leash. I also use the flexi retractable lesh and this combination works quite well. My two yorkies seemed to like them and they don't pull on them like just the plain leather leashes. You can view this harness on the puppia site. Linda, Sassy and Patti |

I also got this on a pet store in Monterey they also have it on ebay now, I don't like it, but hubby love it:rolleyes: Zip Lead Retractable Dog Leash Medium - eBay (item 400102785027 end time Sep-08-10 13:07:54 PDT) I also have try the over the head puppia harnesses, but they don't fit right on my girls, from puppia I love the step in, they are the most comfortable harnesses ever and they don't make that hacking sound, I just don't use it on hot summer days. I don't use our Flexi Grip anymore but when we did I liked the one that is called "nylon tape". Some have a cord attached to the nylon tape and some are just the nylon tape. I didn't like the corded one. :) |

I use flexi retractable leashes and Puppia harnesses for my boys on a daily basis, and I love both. I got the leashes from Walmart for only $10/each. They have a ton of colors and I found some that match the boys' harnesses perfectly. :) This person on eBay has the best prices for puppia harnesses and they always offer free shipping. I would highly recommend them: Wet Nose Kouture items - Get great deals on Harnesses, Puppia items on eBay Stores!. And I see that they also carry buddy belts as well, just in case you wanted to check those out. Hope this helps. :D |

The all belt ones are nice, they are significantly more money though. $10 more on e-bay. I just read that the small size doesn't fit hands well... but I'm going to have to see if I can hold one at the store because I don't want to spend $10 extra dollars for a leash rated 44lbs when my dog is only 11. My hands aren't big, so I guess I have to go see them in store. Thanks, I will take some time to see if I could get a small all belt one... as long as it fits my hand and it's worth the extra money, I'll try to go that route. A medium all belt one is $33 and up though :( |
