Life jacket vest - worth it? We are about to go on vacation. I wanted to get a water vest for Copper for the lake, pool, etc. Is it worth it? Do the vests fit well enough for good mobility? They look kind of bulky for a small dog. |
3 Attachment(s) Jackson loves his! It's an Outward Hound. He knows how to swim really well without it but it's really nice to have as a support if I know he's going to be in the water for long periods of time. He runs in it and everything :) He's 15lbs and wears a Small. |
Love the pictures of Jackson!! Looks like he is having fun. Copper is 7 months old and I am excited about taking him on vacation to Lake Tahoe with us. It is just my husband and me. We stay in a house and do activities from there. So many things to do and places to go in Tahoe...I know Copper will love it! I have to find a very small vest if I get one...haven't seen many little ones... |

You can get them in smaller sizes. I have a pink one for Tila that I bought from Petsmart. It's an extra small, but they had xxs there as well. |
My Bella had one when she was really little. It really helped keep her nose out of the water with every little wave in the pool. Now she is bigger and her legs are longer and she of course is stronger. But my little one will always have short legs..so i use it on her now to keep her nose up! |
I wouldn't take my into the water without a vest. Better safe than sorry. They tire very easily and quickly. |
Dante is 3.5 pounds (but just 16 weeks old). I got him an XS Outward Hound vest at Petsmart, because they didn't have any XXS and I wanted one for 4th of July, when we would be boating. The XS fits 11-18 pounds. The XXS (which I ordered from Drs. Foster & Smith) fits up to 10 pounds. I was able to "fit" the XS on him by cinching everything up very tightly, but since it wraps the body with velcro on the bottom and is too big, it immobilizes him more than I want. The XXS fits him much better. We live on a lake, and all 3 of my dogs (even the 33 and 37 pounders) are in life vests when on the dock or on the boat. They can all swim, but I'm calmer when I know they have the "help" of the life vests if they fall off the dock (it's happened to every one of them, including Dante). Plus the vests all have handles that make it much easier to get a dog back out of the water. |

Definitely worth it. The handle is great for picking your dog up out of the water. The flotation of the vest will help the dog's body stay level on the water, so that the dog utilizes both front and rear paws equally. It should keep the nose up out of the water and is an additional safety feature should your dog get all tuckered out away from shore. |
YES, YES, and more YES!! Both Kela and Keller have one. We have the same one as Britster. We got ours at petsmart. Kela weighs 5.0 lbs and wears an XS. Keller weighs 7.0 lbs and wears a S. Keller hates the water so of course... he hates in life jacket. But Kela loves hers. Last year we took both of our yorkies to Lake Powell. While I was out wake boarding, Kela got anxiety and jumped out of our boat and started yelping and barking. It was a horrible experience but I think her life jacket saved her life. I think she was just so shocked at A. how cold the water was and B. how far away I was. So I would highly suggest getting one. |
Thanks to all for the advice. Now to find an xxs for Copper... I've run out of time to order online! |
2 Attachment(s) I'm glad you decided to get one... I also have the Outward Hound vest from Petsmart, and it gives me the peace of mind knowing if he falls into the water... he will be okay. Here is Couver using his last summer at the local wading pool. He was the only dog that could swim... the rest could walk through it :p |
Cute pictures! Nothing more fun than a wet yorkie!! LOL |
Yes Definitely! The bright colors of the lifevests make them more visible for when they swim off after ducks and stuff, and for any boaters in the area. A dog with no vest is very hard to spot in the water. |
1 Attachment(s) Attachment 322076 Yes they need a life vest. One time Ivy jumped off the boat that was before she had a vest I will never have them on the water without one. And now every time I get out their life vest out they all know they are going on a boat ride and get all excited. |
