Are pig ears ok to give? I tried to search the forum and said "are, pig, ok, to" are too short of words or too common and not searchable. Uni got a free pig ear from the pet food store today, can I give it to her? Are they 100% digestable? They tried a cow hoof too but it was as big as her head. |
I thought they weren't  Does anyone know for sure? |
Yeah I don't remember. i know raw hides are bad, are pig ears the same thing? Uni keeps walking by the counter looking up. She knows where it is. |
hmm, I don't give them to my little ones. The big boys get them, but I put them in the same class as rawhides. It takes a long time to get them chewed down and then they have the same consistency as rawhide. It is a skin that they can be a choking hazard. I could be wrong but that's been my take on it. Bear gets a whole ear and the girls get a cookie. Baxter the goat gets a small ear piece. |
W/her recent episode w/ pancreatitis, I wouldn't give it to her. Not only is it a choking hazard, I don't trust the preservatives used to make those things. But they LOVE it... |
thank you Jenny. She knows its up on the counter and has been crying for it. I will toss it. |
After pancreatitis, we are banned from any greasy treats including things like pig ears and bully sticks. It's just not worth the risk anymore. |
I would be more concerned of the bacteria.....pigs ears, hoofs, etc. |
They are edible and more digestible than rawhide I think. That said, I give them only very infrequently to my Westie and never to Lucy. Ringo's breeder told me when I got him that she would prefer he have those over rawhide. Not sure why and I didn't know better at the time. I know rawhide bones are bad for him because he will simply eat them in one fell swoop and not chew on them like he is supposed to. I've tried bully sticks with him but they are not his favorite. I'm looking for something that he can chew - that will take him a while and NOT be bad for him. |
Ringo--Have you tried Ryan's Himalayan chews?? They are yaks milk and something else..Ryan is a member here. They last forever and are supposed to be really good for them. |
ok, thanks guys, in the trash it goes. |
I was told that it can give them slither and cause intestinal damage. ok so in the trash it goes I hope you go get uni something else bc you know she will be looking for that;) I can just see her now but Mom I want that and wagging her little tail;) |
The Himilayan treats are very good and they last along time. Also, check out sweet potato chews from Sam's Yam's. Both last a while and they are much safer than pigs ears or rawhide. |
We've gotten the Himalayan chews from Ryan and they are a big hit with my two (our mini schnauzer isn't too discriminating, but our Yorkie princess is quite picky and she LOVES them). The only problem is they come 3 in a pack so now we have one left. One chew + two dogs= we need to place another order asap! :) |
We've ordered individual himalayan chews from fidodogtreats dot com. |
