Gate shoppping....looking for suggestions- gotta a jumper here I am looking for a gate...I have a picture in my mind but I can't find ANY out there. I have a jumper so I have found vertical bars in the gate work best for us. BUT...big problem...the designers of these gates space the bars too darn far apart. They can get their heads through and I just don't think thats safe. So my nice walk thru gate needs to have a smaller gate with it that I STILL have to step over. PITA!!!!:thumbdown Has anyone found a gate good for a jumper? |
i wish i had an answer for you, as i have a jumper too!! i got a mesh ex-pen with a top, but she tore a hole in the mesh door and escaped!! until i figure something else out, she goes in her kennel when i leave.... i hear there are metal ex-pens with tops, but i haven't seen them myself.... i did get a suggestion to use a fitted sheet on top, but it didn't work for me.... |
I purchased a mesh gate from pet edge that works well for us, my largest escape artist is 6lbs ish. I did build a barrier by using a pre cut wood shelf and decorative wooden brackets. I can snap a photo if you would like it actually works great and I don't have to wrry about their heads and nails getting caught. |

I have a jumper/climber also. Thus far she hasn't been able to jump the Evenflo Expansion Swing Wide Gate You have to mount it, but unlike other gates it swings out to open (or we just leave it half way to walk through. I got mine at Walmart for $29 Walmart.com: Evenflo - Expansion Swing Wide Gate: Health & Safety |
My Alyssa is an escape artist...she gets out of anything... I used to buy the baby gates and she would bite holes in them to get out. Finally on her birthday my husband and I went to PetSmart. They had a 4 ft. metal gate with vertical bars going up. There is about a 2 inch space between the bars and she cannot escape. I have the gate on the kitchen which keeps them confined when we are not here. Alyssa is the only yorkie our local Petco has had who stood flat behind the gate and jumped to the outside. They said other dogs have done it but no yorkie. She also escaped from her metal kennel with metal bars. She was bleeding but she got out. |
Well there is a fabric gate but I would worry if you had one that chewed. Walmart.com: Evenflo - Crosstown Soft & Wide Pressure Mount Gate: Health & Safety This would be the one I would try for a climber, it's clear plastic, nothing for them to grab a hold of to climb. It can even be mounted so that it swings and opens with the handle if need be. I have a similar with the same setup, just different paneling with the standard holes and I love how easy it makes it to use. I have one climber and my gate doesn't quite make the cut but it does deter her some. I would have loved to have gotten the gate I listed below but I didn't find it until after I already bought my gate. |
When first home, we used an Xpen, which Chloe quickly learned to jump over. An expensive experiment that I returned! We evolved in to a simple $20 wooden ( not a good idea for the chewers ) baby gate from Wal-Mart stretched across the doorway of her room. It worked fine until we came home from work one day only to have her greet us at the door? We raised it a bit thinking she wouldn't be able to get over it and she weasled her way under it. The lasting solution that has worked so far...we have 2 gates...one on top of the other in the doorway. It's worked beautifully! She has her own "bedroom" and is able to see in and out without the confinement of the door being closed. Luckily for us, it's been a cheap alternative. Good luck! |
I was needing a gate for the den for the times I didn't want the girls in the rest of the house. I wanted one high enough that they couldn't jump over but, I didn't want one that I would have to step over since I have health problems. The den door opening for the gate is 72 inches wide. We found a gate that would slide to that width at Petco. My DH stained a 2x4 and attached a T to each end. On the ends he attached casters. He locked the caster in on one side of the gate and I just swing the other side open as I go in and out the den> It looks and works great! |
My gate has vertical rails so we attached a piece of clear perspex to it.Job done, one see through opening gate thats Ellie proof:D |
