dog carrier purse Hi everyone, let me just say thank you ahead of time for taking the time to read this and give your advice. I have a 4lb Yorkie male, named Izzy, who loves to come with me everywhere. He was give to me last year, at the age of 2. My question is, is it possible to teach him at this age, how to like his carrier purse? How can I train him to go in it, and stay in it? I want to take him with me to places, that allow him, but would prefer it be in his carrier. Any training advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks....Izzy and Mommy:aimeeyork |
I purchased a Kwigy Bo purse carrier for my little boy to travel in style during our Thanksgiving trip. To get him use to it, I would put a blanket in the bag and put it on my bed. He slept in it a few nights before I finally took him out in it. When I did, I took him to dog friendly places and let him ride in his carrier with his head out. He was clipped in of course. Now, if I need to close the carrier for whatever reason, he's ok with it because of the windows it has. Back in Nov, we were still "new" to each other and he's incredibly fearful, so I had to work with him and go slow. But now he will go anywhere in his carrier and will even jump in on command. |
Thank you for the advice. I will give that a try. Did you have to use treats at all? |
my pup is almost 4 years old and she loves her bag! i put her blanket (which i slept with for a couple nights to make it smell like me) and a chewy and a couple treats in there and then i left it laying around so she could smell it or whatever. i actually didn't put her in it until it was time to go, but she took right to it. sometimes she likes to poke her little head out and other times she will lay down and hide when she doesn't want to be bothered. it took her a couple times to get used to being put in there (i never tell her to get in, i'm usually in too much of a rush LOL), but she never gives me any trouble. she's a pretty mellow girl. now when she sees me pick it up, she starts jumping around like oh it's time to go!! yaaaay!!:p |

Both of my dogs are still puppies. I have taken both of them everywhere with me since I bought them. They both LOVE to go "Bye Bye" with Mommy! LOL!!!! My pomeranian is now too big for the carrier I used to put him in. So, I have bought him a harness that is used with a seat belt. I also have bought a booster seat that I plan to use. My little yorkie will be small even as an adult so she will always fit in the carrier that I use when we go places. I bring along toys, blankets, treats, food, water, food/water dishes, leashes and harnesses for both of my puppies whenever we go places. |
Nothing is working :( Izzy just got a beautiful Pet Flys carrier and it's gorgeous. Problem is I can't get him to go in the whole bag. He will poke his head in every now and then, but then he jumps away from it. I tried putting treats in it and he'll go in and get them, then jumps right out with the treat. I'm getting desperate as it was an expensive gift and I'm dying to bring him to more places. Please does anyone have any new advice for me? do you think it's possible to get him to enjoy it? Thanks so much...:aimeeyork |
Did you try letting him sleep in it? If he associates it as a comfy safe place then maybe he wouldn't mind being taken out in it? |
Hi yes I've left it on my bed, where he always sleeps, and he won't stay in it. He barely puts his whole body in it. I hate to let these two gorgeous bags go to waste. I would love to be able to travel with him more. Thanks for helping me out with advice. |
Don't wait for him to put himself in it. It takes a while for them to realize the purse means something. Put your little guy in it at night, leave it wide open and if he gets out put him back in. Make it comfy for him with a blanket (if you have AC since it's now hot). Try it every night. Do you take him out in it and leave it wide open for him to see his surroundings? Does the PetFlys have a clip to secure him inside? |
Thank you for all the great advice. I will try those things. I will continue to show him interest in it, by putting him in it with his toys, etc. I will also try taking him out in it too. It does have a clip inside to clip to his harness. I'll keep you updated to how it's going.. wish me luck :) |
