D.A.P. Dog Appeasing Pheromone Spray I ordered this spray to see if it will help calm Sydney down during car rides. It has received mixed reviews. I'll let you know what happens after it's delivered. ![]() |
Didn't work...bummer. |
I have used the DAP collars in the past and they have calmed the situation slightly. didn't use the DAP spray. I also have used Feliway with my cat. The spray did work for her. kept her away from the furniture and areas i didn't want her to go to. plus had the feliway diffuser in the room to have constant release of the pheromones. i believe the combination worked even better. Feliway i believe is like comfort zone for dogs. |
HANG ON WAIT !!!!!! before you say it did not work it takes time to build in the area and then to take effect on the dog.... Days not hours. I am sorry I did not check to see when you put it in and the time you said no it did not work. If it was hours that is not long enough.... sadly sometimes it does not work or that brand is not the one that works best for your dog. What did you buy? JL |
1 Attachment(s) I had scene the comfort zone for dogs, but I will have to look if they have one for in the car. It was this brand I bought, but in the spray: |
Ok From what I know of that is the best one out and it does take a few days to reach full strenght in the room dependent on the size of room. If you can close a door it will work faster. if you have a large open house it will take longer and may not as there is to much air change. My understanding is that if you are brining in a new dog to get it up and going at least 3 days ahead to have it working well. Wish I had the research on that but it is at home and I am away until late next week. JL |

The OP is having problems in the car with the dog so a diffuser won't work. the collar might work because it will be on the dog all the time so he will be getting the pheromones 24/7. spraying the car would probably have to be done multiple times with windows closed before the dog gets in. OR i just had a thought, maybe try spraying a bandanna and then putting that on the dog for a while before getting in the care |

Not sure that it would not hurt to run it 24/7 for a little while to just pull him down in genral and then do the spray in the car or bananna.....also what about even working with him on going out to the car and feeding him meals in it to give it a differnt feel. he may not eat at first inside so work toward it. Toss in a little through a dogs ears music for cars or even the calming one if he is just hanging around the car. Somehow you have to change his Idea the car is bad. JL |

good suggestion about feeding in the car and spending time in it without it moving first. OP you may want to try a combination of all these things |
I never hear a lot of positives about DAP for Dogs, everyone says it doesn't work. I'm sure it works for some people. On the flipside Feliway for cats really works on the majority. Lots of people have success with HomeoPet Travel Anxiety, something to look into. |
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I will look into all of your suggestions and probably use a combo of them. Did I say thank you? |
I asked my vet about it and she said it's equal to a calming, scented candle to humans. It may work, it may not. I like the idea of spending special time in the car. |
When I first put Sydney in her bag in the house, I give her a treat. When I buckle her in the car, I give her a treat. Being quiet, I give her a treat. She doesn't start barking and crying until I slow down and turn on the blinker. She ignores treats at this point. When I'm letting someone out of the car, she starts to snarl and bark. It's a problem I am trying desperately to fix. |

Then just sit there and feed with turning the cliker on and off and then have someone get in and out. You can start the indicator and the person in and out just in your drive. Up you level of treat from ok to really great can not pas it up so try lots of stuff. Like lick of Peanut butter or vanila drops or ice cream point is not to worry if it is good for dog just that she will start eating and be calm enough to eat. Random thoughts again not an order just thoughts to help if they can. JL |
I have used the collar in the past when i first brought Copper home. He was shakey and nervous, and within 20 mins of wearing the collar he was calm and relaxed, litterally like butter in my hands. It made such a huge difference with helping him get used to all the new surroundings... we put it on in the vets office and the whole staff was amazed by the difference... I am sure this is one of those things that works well for some but not all. |
