Harness or collar
 
This may be a silly question but I am wondering as a 13 week old puppy I'm bringing home what do they need to go outside? Harness I would think because their so small? Not sure if it mattters but my new puppy is a maltese/yorkie mix and tiny.

Yup - harness. :) Yorkies are prone to collapsed trachea and have very sensitive necks. Even my Jackson who is 12lbs wears a harness for walks. He also wears a collar 24/7 for tags. :)

yes you are right a harness!!! only keep a collar on for id purposes. yorkies are susceptible to collapsed tracheas, so when you are walking them ALWAYS use a harness. hope this helps and good luck with your new baby!!!;)

Harnesses for walks is a must. Even when they're bigger it's better than a collar. However, Kaji wears a collar for his bells and tags at all times. He's hardly completely naked because he wears his id's. I've never taken him for a walk by attaching his leash to his collar, I'd rather let him walk on his own than potentially harm his trachea. But your baby still has a while before going outside. YTers with puppies recommend to wait 2 weeks after all puppy shots are done to insure immunity against nasty infections. Don't know myself since Kaji was already one years old.

harness for sure. i use the collars for pretty or for tags, we have one with her name in rhinestones for fancy and one with tags for going on walkies. but always always attach a leash to a d ring on a harness, harness vest or harness dress.

chattiesmom has silk step ins custom made and they are great!! :D

also, you can take the pup outside to pee before all shots are done, but i would recommend fencing in a small area in the backyard with chickenwire that's just for pottying purposes and make sure no other animals can enter into it.

just be careful that the pup doesn't leave your yard and go places such as walkies until all shots are done!! :D

Now this is something I did not know, and starting now we will be using a harness. I have a Maltese also is this the same for all small dogs?

I'm not sure about ALL small dogs but I do believe that Maltese can have the trachea problems as well. So, yes, I would use a harness for the Malt too.

This is how I've been explaining it to my family and friends. Imagine a twig and a tree branch. If I hold a twig with one hand, am I able to break it? Yes. If I try to do the same with a branch, will I succeed? No. Well, a small dog is like the twig, and a larger dog is like the branch. I just wouldn't risk it with any small dog. All you need is a step in harness which is extremely easy to use, you really have no excuse not to use a harness.

Correct, my maltipoo, baxter has trachea issues. So, I'd use the harness for the malti as well. As far as taking the pup outside, unless you have a fenced in area already that you are positive no foreign dogs have been in, I'd forego that. Parvo contamination can remain for what seems like forever and you cannot control the dogs that impinge on your yard without a fence. A guy down the street from us had to post a sign on his property that he has parvo on his yard so everyone steers clear....hmmm, come to think of it that would be a really great way to keep people from letting their dogs poop on your lawn... excuse me while I go dig up that big magic marker....

:) got my marker already! and now im anxious to go get harnesses in the morning :) Hope I can find nice boyish ones ... gonna look for a step in I think I like that idea!

Thank you for all the replys. It makes sense to use the harness. I want to get a cute collar with name tags ONCE I figure her name out lol.
