Doggie Steps Jack sleeps in bed with us ..but jumps off bed several times during night.. 11 lbs .. have to lift him as he wants to get back up, so bought steps ... trouble training to use them. He uses 2 steps to enter house , but not used to 3 steps to bed. Have tried treats on steps, but no luck...yet. Any ideas? |
We have steps all over our house :D Are you steps sticking straight out from the bed? We had to put ours up against the foot of the bed - so they run straight up the stairs and just take a little turn to the right and they're on the bed. |
I should have said that one whole side of the steps is leaning up against our bed - that way it's like a wall and there's only one side of the steps open (so to speak). Hope that helps. |
doggie steps Steps are at foot of bed.. 3 steps and about 8 inches from mattress.. steps are covered with carpet and very stable. Sometimes he will jump unto bed, but not very often and not at night. have tried treats, but as mentioned no luck.. |
I have steps on each side of my couch and mine will use it sometimes and not others. I also have steps leading up to the cover on the hot tub and while they go up that, they usually will jumpover the top (3rd) step, lol. I would say give him time, and he will learn and get the hang of the steps. Maybe try using a leash to walk him up and down the stairs to give him an idea of what you want him to do. :) |
Thanks for the thought about side against bed..will try. The top step is only about 8" below the level of the bed. Jack is about 5 years so is very agile, so we just have to get him used to something new. We'll keep trying. |
The leash sounds like a good idea .. although sometimes he objects to it when out walking ... you know Yorkies :-( Thanks! |
my dogs started using the stairs to get on my bed when they were just pups. They have never been hesitant about using them. My little guys use them to get on or off the bed my bigger guys (non-Yorkies) will jump down from the bed but always use them to get on the bed. My bed is rather high so there are 6 steps to get to the top of my bed. The stairs are turned so they are against my bed and then they have to turn to get off the steps and onto my bed. |
When you say no luck with treats, do you mean that he will never use the steps, even if given a treat? I teach by luring with a treat, use a treat that they really love and praise the heck out of them. Train to go up, and to go down. If they jump, put them back on the bed, and make them go down the steps. |
i know another member or 2 on here built a little ramp that goes from the floor to the top of the mattress if the steps don't work for him then maybe a ramp where he can run straight up into the bed? |
