Do I need training spray for my pee pad? What do I use on the carpet for accidents? We pick up our Yorkie today!! We are thinking we will name him "Bear", but we will see what he looks/acts like first :) We are going to pee pad train first due to the MANY feet of snow outside. Do I need training spray so he knows to use the pad? What brands (and where do I get them?) of carpet cleaner do you recommend for cleaning up accidents off carpet? THANKS for all your help...we are SO excited!! |

I'm from MI too and we really do have alot of snow! My dog is pee pad trained, it just made the most sense for us, although he will poo outside most of the time. The pads we have used already have a scent, so we have never used a spray. We use the Nature's Miracle Ultra Lock pads. After trying some different ones, we like these the best. As for the carpet spray, we used Natures Miracle for the pee spots and Woolite Pet + Oxygen for the other messes. It works great, even on big messes and we have white carpet :) Welcome to YT! Have fun with your new little guy! Oh, and take lots of pics, they grow up so fast ;) |
Don't forget to keep us informed of your fur baby. We have alot of snow so Marcie uses pee pads but during the better weather-she prefers the outdoors. Welcome to YT. Everyone here is great! |
I'm in the middle of training Ruger now. We have snow on the ground from Nov to April, and he got used to the snow pretty quick. At first he would look out the door and shake and now he goes off the beaten path and plays in it. Actually, he hasn't seen grass yet, so that will be interesting. I just put a sweater on him at first, and I have some new coats on order as he outgrew the sweaters. Mostly, he just runs around in the snow au natural. |
My Zeke is both paper trained and outside trained and does very well. One thing to keep in mind is that some dogs will not use a pee pad once it has been used. They want a clean one. You will just have to experiment. I never have said one word to my dogs when they do their business where they are not supposed to. I only give praise and goodies when they do good. I feel if they reaLIZE THAT THEIR POOOPING AND PEEING in certain places upset us, that is where they will go there just to push our buttons. |
Congrats on your new pup! :) When we first got Bailey, we kept her confined to the family room (blocked off all exits and hiding places) and laid down old blankets for potty training. Blankets were washed after accidents - to remove the odor and save the carpet. Once she was potty trained, the blankets came up and she was gradually given access to the rest of the house as she earned it. Good luck!!! :) |

My Leilah was kinda cardboard box trained by the breeder and by the time we brought her home we realized we would not be taking her out in the cold for a while. We went back and forth between pads, grass patches, and litter box training. We finally decided to try the litter box with the compressed newspaper pellets. IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM! She started using it almost immediately, going into it on her own and peeing the very first day. By day two she had it down packed and we had no accidents. We have had her for two weeks and she's done great. She will sniff around the carpet and get ready to squat occasionally, but we get her in the box real quick and she will do her business. Whatever you do, just be consistent and don't give her room to have accidents. I read somewhere that it's not the puppies fault they had an accident, its our fault! Good luck! *Some people worry about the pellets because of the pup eating it. At first she would chew on the pieces but I think she realizes now this is the stuff I pee in and its not food. I guess each pup is different. |
