Car Seats/Straps As many of you know, Pippi is my registered service dog, and as such we're in the car an awful lot. As it is now, Pip has a pink pad (the only good leftover from a recent bad relationship:rolleyes: ) she sits on in the passenger seat. She stays on this pad like it's velcro. When when get to our destination, I get out myself (I tell her to "stay"), then when I'm ready, I lift the seat's armrest and say "paws up" (the word she was trained when I need her to jump in my lap). I feel *very* insecure that she's not buckled in whilst driving. Are there any safety belts or ideas on keeping her restrained? She will not go to the backseat, nor will she go into a bag (she thinks she's my protector of sorts, and gets v upset when she can't make eye contact w/me. Thanking you in advance :) :animal-pa:aimeeyork |

I have something called a Batzibelt for Kona. It is a ring (sort of) that goes on the seatbelt - the seatbelt is buckled like someone is sitting in it. Then it has a strap that attaches to the ring and her harness. It is adjustable longer or shorter. Kona is able to still see out the window and wander a little bit on the back seat if she wants to, but I have the peace of mind knowing that if I have to hit the brakes suddenly she won't go flying and if something were to happen she could not go running off on her own scared. I liked it so much I bought 2 more for our other cars. The ring can come off so I can put her in the front seat if I want to. The ring also stays on and won't interfere with a human passanger if I need to take people. Here is a link - I hope it works! I have a booster seat for Sophie Kate, its the Petco version of the link sent in the previous post. I love it and Sophie Kate seems to not mind sitting in it. I like it because there is a hook that attaches to her harness and secures her. She likes it because she can see out the window while riding in the car. Be prepared for a lot of stares at traffic lights. |
pETCO -AND PETSMART HAVE SEAT BELT HARNESSES THAT THE DOG WEARS AND SEAT BELT GOES THRU A SLOT ON THE BACK OF THE BELT AND THEN HOOKS UP WITH THE SEAT. I USE THIS EVERY TIME KATIE GETS INTO THE CAR, |
I just got a harness for Reesie from her groomer that plugs right into the seat belt socket. It ties up a seat belt so she has to have a seat all her own (I think) but that's ok. $7 size XS of course She tossed out the package so I don't know the name but can take a picture or find who makes it. |

In my experience, a crate in the back seat is the safest place for your little one. They even make crates that have a build in slot of the the seat belt. Unfortunately, I have seen a few horrible accidents that will stay with me forever...both involved unrestrained dogs and neither survived. After that I will never let my dogs travel in a car without being in a crate. Another thing about the booster seats and harnesses is they are a little misleading about their safety. In the event of airbag deployment the dog is left unprotected and could be killed or seriously injured. Wishing you safe and happy travels! |
Frankie wears a car harness that attaches to a buckled seat belt. |
Has anyone heard of fidorido? I was looking around on the internet today and found that they make a car seat for dogs that is made very similar to a childs car seat, with the seatbelt going thru the slots in the sides. I have 2 yorkies, and would like to find something to restrain them together (they are very close). I also just got a new car that is all leather interior and I'm worried their sharp little nails will mess it up. Please let me know if you have ever heard of the fidorido. :aimeeyork |
Many petstores (even PetSmart and PetCo) have harnesses that strap into the seatbelt so they will be safely restrained, and they have a carseat that has a strap to hook to their harness so they will be restrained. Would she prefer to stay on the seat or be elevated so she can see out of a window? |
Trixie rides in a snoozer lookout carseat that sits in the backseat of our suv in the middle. She is really quite comfortable in it. she wears her harness and there is a strap that attaches to it so that she is strapped into the carseat. I could use this carseat in the front seat, but I am afraid with the airbags....but something is better than nothing if your pup must sit in the front seat. :animal-pa |
Riley loves his car seat! Riley was given a new "OUTWARD HOUND" CAR SEAT for Christmas, and he just loves it. He looks out the window a lot, but usually, right after we begin to hit hwy speed, he's all snuggled down for a nap. A few people here have been a little upset because it can be a little confusing when having to remove it to allow a person to use that seat in the car... I don't remove mine; I just flip the seat up and it fits nicely into the seat back of the seat. Whoever rides with me sits up against the underside of it. Easy.:animal-pa:aimeeyork |
