what Shampoo should I use?
 

Hey all I was just wondering what kind of shampoo I should use on my 11 week old puppy with very, very, very, very, dry skin??? :eek:

I have been looking on here and had seen some rave reviews on the CC systems, but what makes them so great? Do they make your dog greasy? Are they for very dry skin? Thanks,

I've never used the CC system but would love to. My computer kicks me off line everytime I go to the website. For very dry skin, I'd recommend an oatmeal based shampoo. what type of food is your furbaby on?

I would suggest some Oatmeal shampoo. oatmeal is known for it's soothing effects on the skin, also look for something with aloe in it. NEVER use human shampoo on your dog, it can make your dogs hair over time fall out, and it's formulated for a different PH. Human heads and dog Bodies have two different complex PH systems. so make sure whatever you decide on it's for dogs. also, the dogs dry skin could be from food allergies, so I would ask your vet what he/she suggests.

My puppy had the same issue and at the time I was using "Groomex Puppy Shampoo" and got some pills from my vet for dandruff and they seem to be working really well, but considering your dog is so young, it wouldn't be able to take them. (I think they have to over a certain age.) I now use Gold Medal Pets Puppy. It's non irritating to the skin, and can be used on puppies six weeks and older. a lot of shampoos will dry out the coat by removing the natural oils that puppys need to protect their delicate skin. Gold Medal Pets formula for puppies says it protects those oils.and as I'm reading the back label right now is actually RECOMMENDED for Yorkshire terriors and Maltese. good luck.

Hi, He is on pedigree puppy food in the can and Ol roy hard food. I know alot of people in here spend alot more on the food they give there yorkie than I do. I was actually meaning to ask all of you, do you all feed your dogs human food. I talk to a lady last week that said she feeds her yorkie hamburger that has been drained of all its grease and a scrambled egg every morning, and got on to me for giving my dog hard food. I have owned 2 dogs in the previous, and have only had bad experiences with giving a dog human food. In my experience, the more human, soft food you give to them, the more they won't eat dog food at all. One of my dogs, that is living with my parents---mom cried for me to let her keep my pekingees Daisy when I got married so I left her with Grandma---won't even eat at all unless she is hand fed, and my mom gives her pedigree prime cuts. And both of their dogs will turn there noses up at it. I don't want that at all.
I heard that they have a special food for Yorkies, I might go and look at that.

where do you get that gold medal pets puppy at?

I buy mine at PetsMart. Tigger loves it there. He's my four month old yorkie.

we only have petland and complete pet mart where I live.

Yes they do it's made By Royal Canin and is expensive, but high quality. I don't recommend feeding your dog human food. Also, feeding your dog hard food is actually really good for it's teeth. Yorkies have problems with their teeth when they get older so you need to brush them at least once if not more a week, and should feed them dry dog food. you can give them wet food but I only feed mine wet food in the morning and he eats dry kibble the rest of the day.

I feed my yorkie Nutro Natural Choice Puppy Lamb and Rice. It's all natural and meat is the first ingrediant. Plus it has added vitamens and minerals. It's not advertised on tv or anything but its great dog food. any dog food you get your dog should not have corn in it as corn is non digestable, and meat should be the first ingrediant. Always read the label before purchasing. What you are looking for is the first three main ingrediants. this will tell you what the food mainly consist of. for my puppys food it is: Lamb meal, rice meal, and another rice product. there are no by products in their food at all. By products can be anything like Heads, feet and etc. really gross huh? also with wet food, if you read the label the first ingrediant will be with other foods: sufficent water for processing. but with Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice puppy wet food, the label reads like this: Lamb broth, Lamb, and turkey as the first three ingrediants. Tigger poops less , his stools are smaller and solid, and his coat is shiner. I'm not trying to pursuade you at all, I'm just sharing my opinion. best of luck.

I would go with CC Systems all the way. Made my Chewy's hair sooo much better. I bathe him only every 2 weeks and brush him out with ice on ice every 2-3 days. I would wait to bathe an 11 week old though, they are sooooo small. Chewy is 7 months and has only had 4-5 baths ever. Clean them up when you get them home and then chill out for a bit!

I was told baby shampoo is ok to use on puppies becuase they are supposed to be very gentle? The post up top said human shampoo isnt safe so I wanted to confirm it meant ALL human shampoo, including baby shampoo? Thanks

I don't know that human shampoo is not safe! It's just that the PH is different. I have used Herbal Essence in a pinch and was really happy with the result. CC is just a really good product that I prefer to oatmeal shampoos that I have bought at PETCO.

In terms of food helping the dry skin, just to let you know...Chewy had awful dry skin. He was scratching for dear life! I had him on Royal Canin which has a high corn content. As soon as I switched him to Natural Balance, his skin and coat cleared up and the scratching stopped within a week or so. When choosing food, No corn, no byproducts.

that's what I've told, I would ask your local groomer. or a well-known groomer. and that's supposed to include baby shampoo, I believe.
