Clippers/Grooming set? Hi All, I wanted to know what clippers you use to cut your baby's hair? There are so many out there that Im not sure which are good and which arent. Plus some of them are pretty pricey, so I dont want to spend all that money and not have them work right. Thanks for your advice! |
I use the Oster Deluxe Grooming Kit - 16 pieces w/ DVD ($63.00 at PetSmart). It's the Medium Duty since my dog has a thick coat and lightweight. I started grooming at home when the groomer wanted to charge $45 for a 4 pound dog. I went shopping at PetSmart and have been grooming him myself ever since. I use the Andis Cool Care Plus for when the blades start to get a little warm. I also use the Andis QuietAire blow dryer. It's quieter than my blow dryer and has a stand so I don't have to hold the dog and the dryer. I don't groom and bathe in the same day because it's too much for me and I get tired easily. I usually bathe him one week and shape him with the clippers a day or two later. I know this is opposite how most groomers do it (cut first then bathe) but it's easier to clip him when he has been blow dried/combed out already. Hope this helps. |
I just bought the Oster 10 piece grooming kit today for Light duty it was 32.00 at Petsmart and I really think I should have gotten the medium duty one. This one didn't work so well on my thicker cottony coated girls. |

Thanks for your reply. I actually took him to get groomed on Thurs and they charged me $60 for Maxi (4 pds) and it was his first cut. He was so good and just stood there not moving the whole time so I thought that was really expensive and seriously, while the place was clean and the guy was extremely nice, Maxi's cut was all lopsided in some places and his hair was short in others and long in other places. It was all over the place. I just took him home and trimmed him up myself. The nails were the only part of the grooming that was good. I dont think he was shampooed properly either because he was scratching like crazy and his head smelled like cigarette smoke! We dont smoke and the groomer does. Anyway, after that disaster I want to do it myself. He is really does love his baths and he is used to my hairdryer since we used it since we first got him, but its the clippers Im worried about. Thanks for your suggestion I will check out the ones that you recc. |
We use the Andis easy clip, I picked it up at petsmart a while back. When dh lost his job back in Janurary I knew their would be no extra $ for grooming. I've been doing it myself since March. I don't do nearly as good as my groomer but each time I get better. practice makes perfect right? :p |

I bet when you finished shaping him he looked georgous. I'm not knocking groomers but after some practice it is easier to do it yourself. I take my dog to PetSmart so his nails can be cut and grind but eventually I'll do that myself too. The DVD that came with my clippers helped me a lot since I had no idea what I was doing. Now I'm getting faster and doggone impressed with myself! (patting self on the back) |
We have Wahls trimmers and I groom our Derby myself. It's just to expensive! as long as we don't do it all in one shot, Derby doesn't mind at all. but you guys are awesome for saying your furbaby loves a bath? Derby lasts 3 minutes and he's DONE! lol! he's getting better. |
