Best Clippers?
 

I have been checking all the brands, reviews, etc. before purchasing clippers and was wondering if anyone would like to recommend what they use for their babies. Thanks!

I greatly recommend both Andis & Oster. Wahl is a good brand as well.

I know many many hairdressers who use those brands, and I use an oster & andis clipper on Winston that were my mothers - both purchased over 20 years ago. She's replaced hers a few years ago, and from what she can tell they're made just as well as they used to.

Where do you buy this brand? I have been looking and I couldnt find anything like this at pets stores.

I use human clippers on Winston personally... and they work just fine since he doesn't have the heavy dense fur that other dog breeds tend to deal with. I also grew up watching my mother use the same (human) clippers on our schnauzers all the time with out a problem. When I have some free cash I'll be heading to Sally's and picking up a newer model. (Simply just because the 10 yr old cords are starting to worry me a bit.) I've used both "styles" ("human" vs "pet") and I've never really noticed a difference in heat or cut. Other people's experience's vary though and you will get opinions either way.

If you'd prefer to pick up a pet model to be super sure....

I've also seen Andis at my local petsmart, and some of my local retailers. I do know Petsmart stocks their products online as well, so does UPCO.


Wahls is a lot harder to find I think (if you want the pet line). They have their retailer listing here: Wahl Clipper Animal Division

If you have a tractor supply store near you, that may be your best bet (or buy online.) Wahl also has their online store (just click "buy" under the product in the info page.)

If you have a local Sally's near you, if might not hurt to stop in or call and ask them what pet clippers they carry. They should carry at least one model. (Or they used to anyway!)

I started grooming my Yorkiepoo because every groomer I called wanted over $40 for a 4-pound dog. I bought the Oster 16pc Deluxe Dog Clipper Kit w/DVD, Medium Duty, and the Andis Dryer w/stand; both from PetSmart.

The clippers get a bit hot but I use Cool Lube, and hopefully I will get faster with practice. The clippers are really quiet and the dryer is too. I take him to the vet to have his nails cut ($10).

thanks Im just scared that Im going to hurt him! I bath him and use the dryer to dry him and he seems okay with that. And I want to get him used to me cutting his nails so that I dont have to pay for the groomers to do it, but I dont think I will be able to cute his hair myself. He wiggles and Im scared Im going to hurt him. I can probably do his back while he sleeps on me, but I will never be able to get to his face. :rolleyes:

I didn't think I would be able to groom my dog either. Prince is 7 months and stays in mid-air most of the time - he's part Poodle so he likes to jump.

I don't bathe and groom the same day, that way he won't have to be still for too long. When I groom, I have everything laid out beforehand. I put him on top of the bathroom vanity and tie his leash to the towel rack so he can't fall off. I clip a little with the clippers, give him a treat, clip some more, give another treat.

We have been practicing the "Wait" command at home. "Wait" means freeze, "Good Boy" means unfreeze. This give me just enough time to do most of the face area. Maybe when your baby is a little older it will be easier.

Prince has black nails and I am scarred I would cut too much so I take him to the vet for a mani/pedi. :animal-pa
