Doggy Stairs? I'm on a hunt for some doggy stairs. I recently got a new mattress and apparently nowadays, mattresses are much higher up than they used to be, so obviously now my bed sits up much higher than before. Sasha loves being able to go up on my bed. I do currently have this cushion sort of thing alongside the bed to help her a little bit, but to me, I still would feel better if she had stairs to use. I've been looking online trying to find good ones, but I'm not having much luck. The bed sits pretty high, so I'm trying to find some stairs that have somewhat of some good height. If anyone has any recommendations, I'd really appreciate it! |
I got the ones that are from the tv infomercial... I got them at walgreens. They are a pretty good height and are quite durable. They were on sale for $10 when I got them. |
I have the ones like this: Dog Stairs: Pet Steps at Drs. Foster and Smith I used to have the ones like Walgreens, but whenever people came over they would step on them or lean on them and they would break. I have NO idea why they thought that a little dog stair for my yorkies would hold them up, but they did it to THREE sets and three diff people did it!! |
the ones at walgreens arent high enough for my bed... and so my husband built one and covered it with carpet... simple to build and sturdy. |
We bought a Europian bed from Ikea.. it has slats and you put the mattress on it.. makes it much lower..it is perfect and much less worry.. we had a dog that fell off the bed many years ago and punctured her left lung and bled out in less then 10 minutes.. so I still use a stool.. but this makes the bed much lower and much safer.. Read a thread earlier that the dog jumped off the bed even tho a step was there and broke a leg in two places.. had to have surgery.. anne |

Hmmm...now where to find a carpenter? :D |
I was going to suggest E-Bay and/or Amazon, too. That's where I purchased the ones for my bedroom. The bed sits high, with the surface at 26" from the floor. Lots of the newer mattress sets are even higher ... I purchased a 5-step staircase that's covered with carpet, which helps them get a better grip when they go tearing up/down the stairs. This sets the top stair at the top of the mattress, so they just step over. I put the stairs parallel to the footboard rather than perpendicular; it takes up less space that way and is actually a straight shot from the doorway. I wish I could remember who the vendor was; he makes them up for you as they're ordered. He has several levels of "quality", which has nothing to do with the base staircase, just the way it's finished (grade of carpet, etc.). His economy level is covered with the kind of carpet used in cars: durable and inexpensive (which is what I ordered). His stairs also come with different tread widths so they can be ordered for elderly big dogs, or tiny little balls of dynamite. I ordered the ones for little dogs; the treads are 5"D x 10"W with a riser of 4.5". With the sides, it's 12"W total. It is absolutely perfect for little dogs, like it was measured for their stride. And because it was designed for little dogs, the overall measurements are smaller, so it takes up less space than stairs that were designed to allow a Rottie to get to the bed ;). I think they were about $60 at the time, with $20 S/H. Good luck with your hunting, but you may wish to keep the dimensions in mind so you don't get one that's too big - and spend $$ you don't need to. |
1 Attachment(s) I purchased my stairs on eBay also. The seller was topdogsteps. They are great, high-quality wood steps and covered in carpet. I think he also makes wood ones where just the actual steps have carpet (so the puppy doesn't slip). He has different heights, widths and even sells ramps. He ships very quickly and was great to work with. Since they are completely covered in carpet, he even added little non-slip material on the bottom so it wouldn't slide on the wood floors (or scratch them). These are the steps we purchased 18" tall wood Dog steps, Pet stairs,CHIHUAHUA, Cat, new Oliver even found another use for them :p |

I wanted to add when I was just looking at this guy's listing on eBay, he now sells steps that actually DO make use of that space! There is one where the top step flips up somehow and you can store stuff inside. I wish I had seen that one when I bought mine! Cute idea for doggie toys! |
I got this one for my KJ's, they are super happy with their steps...;) Pet Stairs Small Dog Cat PUP STEP Puppy Folding Steps - eBay (item 270286655322 end time Jul-09-09 10:28:30 PDT) |
stairs We built ours out of upholtery foam, made it the exact height so my little Fergus could get up on my chaise, and covered it with fabric that matches my living room. Everyone loves his little steps, and I don't smash my toes on something else hard sticking out beside my couch! That was our biggest problem with the wood stuff, someone was always smashing a toe or bumping into it. My cousin is a foam artist (does projects for the movies) and we are thinking of building some for my parents yorkie now. Kate |
We also built ours out of upholtery foam and they work great. We have a ramp for our very high bed and covered it in a towel, and one set of steps for the couch. Shayna loves them and we do alot less bending over to pick her up. They are easy to make with foam - measure the height and angle (for ramp), use a large knife to cut the foam, Tack 2000/Scotch 44 spray adhesive to attach the foam pieces and Cover in material or pillow cases, or towels. If you can sew find a nice material that matches and construct a cover. Very easy. We had fun and it was a team project. |
