Collar or harness?? I have never had a small dog and have always used collars on my larger dogs. Is it better to use a harness on a yorkie? He is not a tiny yorkie, almost 10 lbs. I don't want to hurt him though! |
Harness. Yorkies are prone to collapsed tracheas, so you never want to use a collar for them. I have heard of some using collars strictly as a place to hold identification, but harnesses can do that, too. Also, I would put the harness on only when necessary, like for walks. When your pup is indoors, you should not have it on. I've heard of yorkies who have gotten their lower jaw stuck under the harness. |
Harness for sure Hi I would harness as well. Both of my yorkies do awesome on harnesses. I too have a collar on for ID purposes,but make sure it is not loose as they will get theur lower jaw stcuk. It happened to our Augie and it freaked him out |
I think it's a personal choice...Teddi is 3 lbs. and has always worn a collar. |
Harnesses only. One hard yank can send them into a choking fit. |

Harnesses always to walk. Collars can be worn if fitted properly. Morgan has always worn one with no problems. It has her id tags on it. I'd rather her have her collar and ID tags on at all times then worry about the chance that she gets out of the house without it. Plus the tags jiggle so i always know where she is. :) Yes harnesses can hold tags too but i wouldn't want to leave a harness on all day long because it can cause matting of the fur. |
Speaking of harnesses, which I agree with wholeheartedly, a while back there was a discussion on the benefits of silk harnesses. I think they were less abrasive than nylon when you're worried about protecting a Yorkie's coat. Does anyone have any recommendations for such a harness, either silk or otherwise? I like the ones that fit like a coat, but I'm looking for something more secure and maybe less bulky. I like step-in harnesses. |
Both. Milly wears a collar with her ID tags (required by law here) but her lead is attached to the harness. If you're worried about a collar getting caught on something and choking your dog, there are collars available that will click open using only a tiny bit of force (no pressy buttons or anything like that). Obviously they're not suitable for attaching a leash to, because if your dog pulls it would just pop off, but they will hold an ID tag securely. But I would never attach a leash to a collar on a Yorkie because of the weakness in their tracheas. As a side note: I'd be interested to hear from anyone who can recommend a harness for a dog who has problems finding a good fit! She has a big chest, but the front strap is always very loose, and I can't take her down a size because then it wouldn't fit her chest! |
I agree! Always a harness. My previous yorkie didn't start with collapse trachea sounds until he was older, but my new guy does it at a year old already. He wears a collar on him at all times that has his tags on, and then when he goes out I put on the harness. Since he is young and likes to run and roll around the harness also works so much better plus I don't worry about him slipping out of it like a collar. |

Harness only. My Yorkie is almost 15 lbs and I would never attach a leash to a collar on her, but I have used a collar for her tags in the past. I attach the tags to their harnesses now. I have tried every harness I found in the stores and none fit my babies right--they are between a small and med and they are either too small or too big. But Cindy (Chattiesmom) makes the most awesome adjustable silk harnesses and I am ordering several diff colors from her, the colors she has are beautiful. They are so lightweight that your pup won't realize he/she is wearing it and you can adjust it to fit like a glove. They are strong too and no worries that they will break. I just ordered the Walk-Nice harness from her and am so excited waiting to get it. |
