Frontline Plus Does anyone know if using Frontline Plus for fleas and ticks can hurt/bother their pup? I give it to my scruffs once a month and after everytime i put it on him, he tries to rub up against the walls, roll on the floor, and when we stop him, he acts as though he has been punished. He just curls up on the other side of the room and tucks his tail in for the rest of the day. Does this mean that it bothers him in a bad way or that it's just uncomfortable. I've tried giving him treats and always telling him hes a good boy when we use it but nothing has worked. Any suggestions? |
Nolee does the same thing! I asked the vet and was told that it is just aggravating to him, b/c it is wet and he cannot reach it. :animal36 |
I was so scared to use frontline on my little one that i put it off for weeks. Finally i did it and he was fine. He did try to roll on the ground right after for a few mins but I think he did that cause it was wet! I talked to my vet right before I used it cause I was so scared. I told him all the bad things I had heard about different side effects and he said in the years he has been in business (which is a long time) that he has only seen two bad cases and that b/c of the dog licking it off!! He said frontline is the best you could use!! I think maybe your cutie doesnt like the wet feeling either, But I could be wrong!! Good luck to you :p |
I would never put any harsh chemicals on my pets. Read up on what can happen. HartzVictims.org - One More Victim is One Too Many Try all natural products you can make at home. These work even better than chemicals and are totally safe. Chinaroad Lowchens of Australia - Ticks, fleas, bees, flies, snakes and other gremlins! And how to deal with them! |
Mimi will scratch the area & Momo will roll around like he's got a crazy itch that he can't scratch! I usu hold them until it dries. If I blow on it, they'll turn around like a bee landed on them or something!:D I've been using Frontline Plus for two yrs on Mimi & she's fine. Make sure you buy it from your vet cuz I heard that the ones you buy online are not effective & they're investigating it...or something like that. |
I just spoke to my vet about this very subject and what he advised me was to put half the amount on and put the remaining in an air tight container wait 2-5 days and put the rest on. This will be my first month trying it so I can not tell you if it works. You can't compare Frontline to the Hartz products they are in a whole different catagory. |
I will NEVER use Frontline or anything else with chemicals on my dogs. I go give them Inteceptor but thats all and I don't like to have to do that. Our little Mandy we lost 5mo. ago, literally could not walk when we put it on her. We went out to eat and when we came back from being gone only an hr. or so she had her back foot turned under and dragging it. She could not walk for awhile. As much as I think of my vet and I trust her I will never put it on them again. They sell it so naturally they are going to say its something else. They said it was nuerological with Mandy. But, I bathed her and bathed her and finally after the stuff began to wear off she was alright and never had another problem. They can't tell me it wasn't the Frontline. She was a mini schnauzer too and I would not think of putting something like that on Kayla. (yorkie) |
:animal36I have 2 yorkies and my vet said to never put more then 1/2 on each one per month. This has worked fine for both dogs.:) |
Jackson hasn't had an issue with it in the past few months he's been on it. |
thank you so much for all your input! i'll try only putting on half. I always thought that the whole thing was alot. thanks! |
Buddy has never had a problem and he's 5yrs old. I have recently started to use only 2/3 of the vial but have been applying it every 6 wks instead of once a month. He's 16.5lbs. This summer I plan on upping it to 7 wks and see if that still works. Honesty, I would never be without flea meds. |
I use half and we always apply it at bedtime too. |
My boys did that too. Now when I put it on, I literally part the hair to the skin, apply it directly to the skin and then fluff the hair back up around it and it seems that it does not bother them at all anymore. |

Yeah me too. It's actually supposed to be applied to their skin...not the fur...and in a line not putting the entire portion in on spot. You just don't want them to be able to lick it. |
It's actually suppose to be applied between the shoulder blades. If you part the hair using the vial and start from the bottom (beneeth the shoulder blades) and go up towards the shoulder blades no liquid will get on the hair, it will go into the skin. Does that makes sence to you? I know what I mean I just hope you can understand what I said:confused: |
I use it on Sophie by Vet recommendation due to the area I live in. I started it when she was around 6.5 lbs. and she is now 10 lbs. and does very well with it. I just put her dose on last night. Other than a little scratching (it does make their skin tingle a bit) she does fine. I understand the fear of the pesticides, as I have the same fear. But here in PA, ticks are really bad and I am surrounded by a wooded area and actually have deer tracks in the snow in my yard in the winter. I have to weigh the options of lyme disease. Although she gets a shot to prevent that, they are not full proof. It's a tough call. You have to go with what feels best for you as this sight will give you many different opinions and you may walk away more confused than before. My favorite suggestion I've read so far is using 1/2 the dose and a few days or weeks later, putting the other half on. If you are concerned, this is maybe a good option for you. Since I know already that Sophie tolerates the whole dose, I just go with that. Good luck! |
I'll remember that for next month! Thanks! |
FrontLine I am having a HUGE problem with ticks!! I mean I find a couple a day on my baby boy. Quite frankly, I don't know what to do. He has to go and do his business, but then I feel all creepy because I found one on me two nights ago, than one on my sheets before we went to sleep. UGH!!! Gross! I've never experienced this, as I got JC only 3 months ago and I'm flummoxed! I've been told to get him on FrontLine immediately, but I just read replies to the thread and I'm afraid to use it now. I need help because I'm freaking out. Thanks! |
I live in southern Texas and ticks and fleas are a huge issue down here. I do use the frontline on Scruffy and don't see any fleas, ticks, etc. He never scratches or has irritation. The only problem I have with it right now is that he is uncomfortable when I put it on him. He just doesn't like the wet spot where he can't reach. But it doesn't hurt to take into consideration the other comments about the chemicals in frontline. |
I had concerns with Frontline Plus, because of the dosage being 22lbs and under. I talked with our Vet about my concerns, and possibly lowering the dosage. He explained to me that the formulas have been revised in recent years, they do not penetrate the fatty layer and therefore never reach the bloodstream to cause organ damage. He also said that reducing the dosage would only cut the effectiveness of the product. He recommended that I use frontline spray if I still wasn't comfortable putting on our babies and adults that are under 5 lbs. He said that the frontline spray is great because it is one pump per 2lbs. and if it needs to be reapplied before the 4 weeks you can. We have a terrible problem with sand fleas. He have 5 acres and about 20 ferrel cats out here. So even with spraying the yards we just cant get them under control. |

I have tried Advantix (or advantage whatever) and the flea pill (which sucked) but nothing has been as good as frontline. I believe they are the best. I have never had a problem with it, and Emmett doesn't seem to have any problems with it either. |

I wouldn't risk the ticks on my pup, on my, or in my house. They're gross and spread disease. better safe then sorry i say. |
Ticks Thank you for your opinions. I am going to try the Frontline. Let's hope it works! :) |
