Thoughts on "Before Grain" food? Has anyone tried this? I noticed that the canned ones were 100% of the meat so I was curious about them. |
bF Merrick? I have Mimi on BF Grain Merrick, she loves it!. I think it makes me poop more often though. I mix it with Grammy's Pot pie with BF grains merrick. Are you thinking about trying it? |

I'm going to have to start tracking this side effect. :p |
I have used the Before Grain dry - I was thinking my 2 might have a problem with grains - paw licking. But then Roxy was still licking paws even on BG - so now I'm trying the Wellness fish base grain-free to see if it's really the chicken she is allergic to. But then I was reading that the paw licking might be boredom  - the other day she was licking for a few minutes - I gave her a bone & she stopped licking. I'm so confused Sorry to go off topic  -- this is what I noticed with the BG, not more poos, or more often -- but larger poo. What a huge difference between the BG & the Wellness (closer to what it was when I was feeding them Innova) They did really like the BG though - and with water added it made a nice little gravy. And I love their sliding zip lock bag |
I tried BG dry awhile back...my Snickers got diarreah and was pooping about 4-6 times a day and then refused to eat it altogether. I do still have a can of the 100% chicken and plan to use it in my rotation of canned. I now feed EVO chicken and my Snick is thiving on it. But Snick did eat Merrick's Puppy Plate for months. I love the Merrick company and was bummed when their grainfree didn't workout for us. |
I like their dry food- my only issue with the wet food is that it is JUST meat- so it isn't really balanced- as they need veggies and stuff- so i suppose it would be good as a way to switch things up a bit but i'd have to read more baout it before i'd just feed the canned food. |
The BG wet is for supplemental feeding only. It is also very high in fat (at least the buffalo I think it is) at like 33%. That is too high for Yorkies in my opinion. |
Yes, I had thought about using it as a supplement to the home cooked meals I give at dinner time. Sometimes I do not have time to make a protein source and was hoping to have an easy back up. We tried the Beef with her last week and found that she was farting like crazy! I think we will try some of the other ones and see if it is just the beef. |

I homecook and cooking fresh every day or two just would not be happening here. ;) |
Harley eats the Merrick Before Grain kibble and loves it. I just purchased my second 6 lb bag, and have recently started to notice smaller poos. Harley only eats about a half a cup a day, so that first bag lasted us a long time. I made the switch after Harley started having horrible gas eating the Turducken, and the owner of my pet food store suggested that it may be all the vegetables that was causing the gas, which made sense because he would eat all the vegetables out first! She suggested that I try the BG before I switched brands all together, and I couldn't be happier with it. PS - My store sells several different YT favorites so it wasn't like she was just trying to offer me the best she had in her store! Jeri and Harley:aimeeyork |
I do freeze much of it, however we have little freezer space and this is not always possible to freeze enough for a longer period of time. I would rather not use the canned but I like to have alternatives that I know she is ok on. |
