no bark collar
 

Hi, I need some information on no bark collars for small dogs. My Emma is 3.5 lbs. I never would have even thought about such a collar (not sure I agree with them), but my living circumstances have changed.

I'm moving to an apt. building that doesn't allow dogs, however because I'm disabled, my doctor completed a form saying I needed Emma as a "reasonable accommodation." The managing company has "warned" that if there is any barking or disturbing neighbors, that I'd have to get rid of her. No way am I losing Emma. She does not bark when I'm with her and normally doesn't bark when I leave her alone where I live now (there are others around nearby and the cats are here). I'm worried that being in a new place (very quiet, no cats) that she may whine or yip if I leave her. I'd like to say I could take her everwyhere with me, but that is not realistic (with the wind chill today here in VT it is about 3 below zero) and I'd rather not take her out in such weather, also there may be things like dr. apts where I can't take her.


So, after all that explanation, does anyone use a no bark collar on their small Yorkie and if so, can you please give me information on it?

What type of collar (citronella spray, ultrasound beep or shock)?

Ellie May, I don't really know anything about the collars; I was hoping someone here could help. Do you know about the types you mentioned?

Elaine, I agree with you; I don't agree with shocking a dog at all, especially such a tiny baby. I was hoping there was something out there on the market that someone on the forum might know about or use that is safe.

I think I'll call me vet as well and see what they recommend. I'm thinking there must be something available that is dog friendly.

Citronella collars are safe. They just spray the dog. Some people have had success with them. It didn't help Ellie and may have aggravated her issue more (I think she thought the broom was spraying her:rolleyes:). It's worth a try though.

I bought an electronic device that keeps Bailey from barking..it is one you plug into the wall. Not a collar. I bought it at Petedge.
I would also try leaving the tv or radio on, also maybe giving her a kong with a treat in it to keep her busy.
Practice giving her a treat when you leave and when you come home. Mine will go lay in their beds when I am getting ready to leave now so they can get their goodbye treat...smart little girls they are!

Premier makes the safe citronella (and scentless as well) collars but they are for dogs over 25 lbs. At the last trade show they told me they ARE making one for small dogs, but it has not been released yet. The scentless one is great as all it does is spray a puff of air, just enough to startle the dog. It wo't work in every case (some dogs will not make the correlation or will be aggravated by it) but at least they are not harmful.

I am keeping an eye on their website for the release of this product.

I have had a fighting issue with my 3 yorkies. I bought a shock collar at Petco and paid over $l00 for it. It has l0 levels of shock starting with a very light static type shock. It can be set with a sound and then if the dog does not stop what you want it to do, you activate the shock. You have to walk around with the remote on you. My collar is still in the box. I never could bring myself to put it on my l0 pound fighter. I have been dealing with her by giving her extra "just mommy and me" time and it is doing wonders. She is just extremely jealous in that there are 3 of them. She was my only baby for 3 years and she does not want to share me. I don't feel that a shock is what she needs. She just needs someone to understand where she is coming from. I bought the collar but will never use it!!!!!!!!! I guess I should resell it on ebay. LOL

We have a two story house & it only works downstairs where it is plugged in though.

Dr. Foster & Smith have the 10 level vibrations collar for a small dog without a remote. I know several folks that have used this successfully to reduce the barking.

Shock Collars
 

Please do not use the Shock collars on your dogs. This can cause other problems as well. You will see even Caesar and Victoria are totally against them and they have shown the other problems that can arise from these collars. There are other ways to work with a barking pet Start with training. Use treats and when they bark with an aggressive voice say SILENT. and when silent give a treat immediatly. It will take a little time but they can be trained not to bark all the time. But Yorkies are also known to be watch dogs. If someone comes near your home they are going to bark.
