How do Kongs work? Ok, so I bought a small size kong for my Maddie. Put some kind of kong stick in it that sticks out the large hole. Maddie ignores it. I have read on here that owners put treats inside the kong and even freeze things inside the Kong. Ok, I guess I am just not getting it, but how do they get what is frozen in the middle out? The end with the larger hole is too big to get her mouth around, so do they just nibble at the hole? Sorry, I just don't get it!!!:confused: I would love to find something to keep her occupied while she is in her kennel while we are gone. |
Essentially they are supposed to be kept busy just trying to get the treat inside. None of mine have ever been interested in a kong...regardless of what I put inside one. |
I guess, as the stuff inside thaws, they lick it out. Some people say they've had success with yogurt and cheerios frozen, peanut butter is another favorite, but Joey has never cared for the Kong, especially the canned product that is called "Kong Stuffin." He loves Merricks Bully Sticks, and those keep him occupied for hours. |
I gave Maddie a bully stick (even after reading on here what they are made from!!!). She chewed on it for a bit and then went and hid it. I got some dental chews from the Vet, she does the same thing, runs off with them and hides them! She is very sneaky, will "hide" it and then use her nose to try to "push" the carpet up and over it so we don't see it. Don't lay down and nap at my house, you will wake up with treats hidden all around you! |
I was gonna get one for Molly for her stocking but it it's that complicated, never mind;) I'm at a loss as what to ger her anyways:confused: |
I got one for Maximus for his stocking this year. Those that use yogurt and cheerios, or peanut butter.....is there a certain product you use? Flavored yogurt? Jif peanut butter? I also bought him some Yorkie Yummies too, I guess I could add some of those in there? |
They sell these stuff that you can put in the Kong. It's in a can similar to Cheese Wiz. The whole idea of the Kong grosses me out though. :p |
Sasha absolutely loves her kong toy. I bought the Kong Stuffin' paste as well as the biscuits made by kong for it. I break the biscuits into little pieces, then put the paste inside until it reaches the top of the hole, then put half a biscuit on top of that so it sticks out of the kong. It keeps her busy for awhile, plus I've heard that things like that are good for their minds because it makes them think. I've heard freezing them is supposed to be good for their gums, but I have yet to do that because as soon as I get the treats out, she expects it right away. You could put just about anything you want in the kong, just make sure they know that it's in there. They'll figure out how to get it out. |
My Nikko has some limited interest in his Kong... If I freeze anything inside it (even the most delicious enticing stuff), he gives up too quickly and just goes to grab a different toy. He also gives up too fast if I put anything wet and sticky inside. But I have put some of his kibble in it, just plain, and though it doesn't last too long, he enjoys it. He rolls it around with his nose and paws... since it's snowman shaped, it rolls in a sort of wide circle, or little arcs of the wide circle anyways. And if he gets it rolling fast enough, or if it tips a little bit toward the big-hole side, a few kibbles tumble out... and he happily eats those. After all, eating anything that falls onto the floor - even if it's just kibbles - is much more fun than just eating out of your own food dish! Hope that gives you some idea of how a kong might work, for a lazy puppy anyhow lol. It would be awesome if frozen stuff inside would keep him occupied for longer, but oh well... maybe when he's a little older. I totally wondered the exact same thing as you in the beginning about how exactly kongs work, but just went out and bought one on blind faith anyways. It's not his favorite thing, but he seems to enjoy it sometimes, so I'm glad I got it. Lauren & Nikko |

1 Attachment(s) I use the Jumpin Jack Kong. I put either peanut butter in the grooves or squish regular american cheese slice pieces into the grooves. All of mine love it!! They don't like any other rubber toys, but go crazy over this if there is cheese or peanut butter in it. The grooves really help clean their teeth too! I ended buying enough of them so they each had their own since they were fighting over them. Once the food is gone they lose interest. But it does take quite awhile and they have to use their teeth to get it out. You can hear their teeth being rubbed by the rubber. Here is a picture: Attachment 257297 |
Gus loves his Kong, with or without a treat inside. Part of the attraction can be a treat - and I think to keep their interest it needs to be something with a great aroma - but part of it is the crazy way they bounce when you throw them. They don't just bounce straight; they kind of go all over the place because of the shape. When I toss it and it bounces off of the furniture and walls, Gus is like a cat chasing a string. Usually I put something inside it that has a strong but delicious aroma, like a piece of meat. He wants it badly enough that he'll work at it for as long as it takes to get it out. |
I shove a small size " busy bone " type treat in Chloe's Kong. It sticks out the end and she will stay at it for a good while. I did buy some of the spray Kong treat , but I only put a little in to make the busy bone more appealing. If it is just the spray or a regular treat , she loses interest quicker. I have never tried freezing anything in it , that's an interesting idea. |
Oh yeah, that reminds me... I've also stuck one of the fatter baby carrots from the baby carrot bag into the larger hole in the kong... it fits nice and snug. I don't think Nikko really cares - he just loves carrots, and will simply use the kong as a "handle" while he rips the carrot to shreds. But I thought it was fun that they fit together so perfectly, lol. Lauren & Nikko |
