Cowboy Magic I don't like Cowboy Magic. I finally had a chance to use it on the boys and I don't like the results. Chip's hair looks dry and coarse now and Smokey's hair feels and looks really oily. I'm not happy with it. |
I only used the Cowboy Magic detangler, not the shampoo or conditioner, it's great in certain situations, but not in others. It's great for the puppy coat that has mats, and used before shampooing, it's easy to get all mats out. Once wet, mats are even more difficult to remove. It's also great on adult Yorkies with cotton coats because they tend to mat often. It's also great to use if you dress your Yorkie a lot, and matting is under the arms, or around neck. Clothing can cause matting in even silky coated Yorkies. Lastly, it's great if they ever get any stickers, these come out much easier because the Cowboy Magic contains a silicone, which makes the hair slick. Joey has a silky coat, and I don't use it on him very often, except when he has a sticker, but when he was a puppy, it was a lifesaver. I only used it once after shampooing and didn't like the way it looked even though I used just a tiny amount. Remember, it's not a conditioner, but a detangler. Other products are good at conditioning, and don't leave the hair looking oily. |
Smokey has a very silky coat and it left his hair looking oily and stringy. Chip's hair is looking better today, but yesterday it just looked dry and coarse. I believe he has a cottony coat, because it's different than Smokey's, but his hair doesn't mat at all, so I'm confused. We used it to get burrs out of Chip's hair yesterday and it worked great for that. I just wasn't impressed with the look of it. With my pups hair, I get better results using baby shampoo or my husband's all natural tea tree shampoo. I have yet to find a dog shampoo for them I really like. |
Maybe Chips hair isn't cottony, there's a third type called wooly that is coarse and more wirery, and some dogs have mixtures of the different types. When I use CM, I always wash it out, but it does come in handy occasionally. One thing about using human shampoos even baby shampoos, since human hair and skin have a much higher acid content than that of canine skin and hair, human products can over time, have a very drying effect on skin and hair. It's not something you'll notice right away, but over time, leave the hair looking fried. You might want to read the grooming forum for favorite shampoo products. I have tried many and have been relatively pleased with all I've tried, but my favorite so far are the products made by the Biogroom company. |
for silky hair I recommend minksheen hehe |
I love Cowboy Magic...BUT...I only use it to help get tangles or knots out and only right before a bath. It does make them greasy but I find a good quality shampoo washes it right out. |

Exactly! I think it is the best for removing matts! I don't have it in front of me, but I believe it has silk in it just like Pet Silk. It does have the same feel to it. I only use a small amount of the detangler anyway....and only concentrated right on the matt. |
