Carriers vs. Crates vs. cages I am told that it is best to "crate" train your doggie. Since I'm looking to get my first Yorkie I'm asking your advice on whether I should get a carrier, crate, cage or ??? I want to have all my "baby supplies" on hand once the perfect doggie is located. |
Well it depends on what you are using it for...A carrier is useful because these are generally more easy to tote around, so for bringing your dog out into public or to the vet these are great, also for travel. A crate/cage aren't they pretty much the same thing? You use these primarily for training and or confining your dog. I would get both. We have a couple carriers, a crate, and an pen and use them all. |
It depends on your situation. There's a difference between crate training and confining your puppy when you can't be there. Crate training is to teach them bladder and bowel control. They should only be confined for short periods at first. If you have to leave your puppy for long periods of time you might want to buy an x-pen or puppy proof a room so you can put down pee pads. It's great you are taking the time to get everything figured out before you get your puppy. Good luck, I hope you find your perfect boy or girl soon! |

Funny you should say that. . . . I just went and purchased a 12 week old girl. The folks that were selling her had the Mom and Dad there on the premises, but they are not breeders. I was a little concerned because the area where the dogs are kept (there were 3 puppies in the litter) was not very well kept, although it was clean I suppose. I hate to sound over the top, but I kinda felt like I was reviewing a day care setting the way I would for my children when they were little. Mom and Dad are about 10-12 pounds. Supposedly, Mom is a pure Breed, and Dad is also but has no papers. They said they cut the puppy's hair and that it will grow in. I just hope they aren't trying to pull a fast one and sell me a mix. I paid $350. They said they wanted to "regain their backyard" and sell the puppies quickly, thus the low price. She seems very sweet. Keep your fingers crossed. I'll bring her home on Thursday since I just was not set up yet for a puppy and have to buy a few things. |

1 Attachment(s) It looks like everyone said exactly what I would say. I kept my babies in an xpen with a soft bed during the day if I had to leave or get them out from being underfoot. And for the first few weeks, when they were still too young to 'hold it' they slept in it as well during the night. Not only did it allow them to potty when need be, since I kept it in the kitchen, I was able to get through the nite without losing sleep!! When they got a little bigger, I moved their crate (without the door) into the xpen area and let them get used to it. Eventually they moved upstairs with their crate and now all 6 sleep in crates in my room. I don't like them in their crates without me near. In case something happens, I am there to let them out. I use the plastic airline crates. Not the wire/metal crates. They are way to heavy to move when I have to vacuum, etc. I attached a picture of what the area looked like. Yes it is my cat instead of a dog, but he was so cute in it!! Good luck! |

Gus has a cage/ crate that he was trained in. We keep his food, water and bed in there. He really doesn't use it to sleep in. Just to eat, drink and hide and to hide things under his bed. He also uses it to run to when he's in trouble. I just point and he goes. He also has a small crate with a handle that is easy to move around. He sleeps in this one at night with the door closed. And he also has doggy pillows throughout the house wich he will sometimes use when I am busy cleaning. I have one in the living room, kitchen and front room. So where ever I go he will go and lay down. He even has one in my mater bathroom! If i don't let him in the bathroom he'll wait for me outside the door just laying there on the the cold tile. |

When we first got Winston, we got a 4 by 4 Xpen. He did pretty well for about a week. Then he discovered that he could pull the nice vinyl cloth that we put down under the xpen... he could really have fun. Well, by the time we get home the nice square xpen became a mangle mess. :( So we went back to the pet store and exchanged it to a big crate (big enough for a full grown lab). Winston loves his space. :animal-sm It's big enough for his bed and toys. Good luck with the process... have fun preparing for your baby. Keep us posted. |
