Washable vs Disposable Weewee pads Hi, has anyone actually ever done an analysis of the cost of using washable vs disposable weewee pads including the cost of detergent, water, and electricity? I have two small dogs who sometimes go through as many as 6 a day. Is it really cost effective? Erika |
I really think I am saving money. The washable ones I make can last much longer before you have to change them than the disposable ones. You would probably only have to change the pad once daily with two little dogs. Mine lasts all day or sometimes two days with my three girls using it. I have been using mine for over a year and they are still going strong. I really like the washable ones. Besides that they don't leak and can't be shredded like the paper ones. I got so tired of lifting up the disposable to change it and finding a puddle underneath! |
Weewee pads Hi, when I say my two dogs go through 6 a day, I have to clarify that I have around 10 of them spread all over so they may use 6 different pads during the course of a day. My little man is not really good so I try to put them where I think he will go - he seems to go in the same spots. My poodle is much better but she is old so I try to give her a few choices. I would probably have to have around a dozen washable ones and I'm afraid I would be doing wash constantly. Erika |

Hi, Erika, Do you use a puppy pen? The pads I have are big enough that it only takes two or three to cover the entire floor of the puppy pen. I start all my puppies out by covering the entire floor area and then gradually reducing the amount of floor covered over time until there is just one pad at one end and their bed at the other. Then when I take the pen down they still go to the pad. It works pretty well. Even though yours are older you might want to try it and see if you can get them to go to just one area and one pad. It sure beats having to step around pads all over the house. Just a thought. |
Wee wee pads and wraps When I first read this I thought you were talking about wee wee wraps. Anyway I would be thinking green. So, I would probably go for what is better for the environment. What is worse? Filling the landfills with more waste or using up water and electricity. I think I would go for the washables. I'm very into recycling.:) |

LOL I think it would take a LOT of those to cover an expen floor!! :D How's the weather up there in Utah? I sure hope it is not too hot in August when we go up for my son and DIL's graduation from BYU. Of course compared to where we are in Texas anyplace is cooler. :) |
Mom has boughten a big box of piddle pads and also I bought a package. She did order some washable ones after reading about them on the forum here. They are not here yet. I will have to find where she ordered them from, but she said they were the cheapest place she found. Her name is ebonysmom if you want to message her and ask. After we use all the disposable ones, we are gonna start with the washable. We will have about 10 in the long run. 5 clean and 5 dirty, or something like that. That way you will have a pretty good size load. One pad usually takes our two new puppies thru the entire day. Sometimes the night too. We do pick the poop off regulary, just so they don't step all in it, b/c they are just little. That may help too. I do think maybe you need to decrease the amount of piddlepads you have in your house. 6 scattered all around may be too many and may be confusing your two dogs. |
I have gone to washable awhile back and will never go to the disposable ones again! I love the washable ones!! I have four, and keep two done at all times! |
Wee wee pads Hi, thanks to all who responded. I hate to say this - my yorkie man is not confused - he just does as he pleases.:( |
What about poo? If they poo on the washable pad? Sometimes Baby Chloe makes one that cant be picked up.(too mushy) |

Then I take the pad to my toilet and wipe, push (or whatever it takes) the poo into the toilet. Then I wash the pad as usual. I usually do a short prewash to get most of it out and then a regular wash with detergent. |
I also switched to washable. I have 2 dogs. I wash them once a week. I keep the soiled ones in a small plastic clothes basket in the garage. They are definately less expensive over time and MUCH better for the environment. I would go for it!!! |
I use a disposable pad upstairs/downstairs and a washable one one in her playpen downstairs.....she only soils the disposable pad downstairs in the morning for her #2 and uses the washable ones morning/night in her playpen for #1 ...so I wash those every 3/4 days....the upstairs disposable is JIC of an emergency during the night.....this so far for us has been working well...:) |
Hmm… is there someone on YT who sells the washable pads? I have one big one that my breeder gave me and two smaller ones. I'm interested in getting a few more. Thank you! |
