whats so bad about greenies? i look everywhere on here and everyone says how bad greenies are...why??? |
my girls love teenie greenies ♥ I think a few dogs got choked eating them. My girls LOVE them but i do supervise them when they chew on one. Our babies can get choked on anything so they should be supervised any time they chew on something that can get smaller and smaller. I take the greenies away when they get too small and then cut it up in to really tiny pieces and they get those and chew on them like a piece of gum! :p |
They break off and can get lodged into the dog's throat. Several dogs have died because of this. They should be taken off the market. Don't believe what you read on the packges. Nyla bones and raw hides are two other products you should not give your Yorkie. |
I think actually the big deal at first was b/c somebody's dogs had eaten them (which they were supposedly intended for that purpose) and whatever they were made of, balled all up in their stomach and caused obstructions that some pets died from. I believe they reformulated them and now they're supposedly safe from that issue, but other people have had choking problems with them in smaller dogs. I still don't use them just b/c of what happened at the beginning....many people swear by them though for their dog's teeth (meaning not the pill pockets but the 'toothbrush"). |
I have a whole bag of them if anyone would like them. My one dog ate one and vomited for 2 days so I never tried them again |
Rawhides and greenies were big no-no's on the list I took for my vet to look over years ago. I think this is what caused Mojo to have to be on IV fluides for 7 days because a piece of it didn't digest and was blocking his intestines. Thankfully, he didn't have to have surgery, but this ordeal made him have a very sensitive tummy! Someone told me that if you cut a greenie into a small bite size piece....the size that most dogs can bite off....put it in water and it will expand to double, triple it size......we did this and it DID! That was years ago, but we have never felt safe w/ using them again! I've never heard about the Nylabones.....the vet we used years ago, when Mojo was a puppy, seemed to think they were okay. --the edible ones. |
well ok then. thanks guys for the reasonings!!! i guess to be more safe than sorry, my boys will not be getting them either, such a good idea...but with obviously a serious flaw. so its our no no at our house too. thanks everyone! |
i just dont trust greenies, rawhides or any other bone thats not 100 percent digestable.. i just wont take the chance since there are so many other things to choose from. |
I talked to my vet this morning and he said that since they've changed the formula there isn't really anything to worry about. It never hurts to be cautious though. |
My Kuma been eating them for about 4years now and never had any isuess with them, every vet visit we get a clean bill. i just never leave him alone when he eats them. |
At the end of our puppy shots, my vet gave me the big bag of the teenie ones. I get nervous giving them to Meeko because of everything I've heard. He gets them every once in a while. I don't just give it to him tho, I hold it and only let him bite tiny pieces at a time. As he chews, I move my hand down more. I only let him have 1/2 of one at a time, too. I heard that Greenies came out with a biscuit that has very very tiny pieces of the original greenies in them. |
I no longer give Mia greenies. Once they are chewed down to small pieces, that's when the accidents occur. Once Mia choked on one, the other occasion the greenie was stuck way back in the roof of her mouth. I couldn't figure out what was happening, I thought she was having a seizure! It was SCARY! A friend of mine bought a large box of single wrapped greenies (must have been pretty pricey) and her yorkie choked as well. She no longer gives the greenies to her. I consider still letting Mia have greenies, but definitely the LARGE size.... and then take them away when they get too small. |

This was soon after they came on the market and all the hype was that they were so good for you dogs - What more do i need to say ? I wouldn't let any of them near my dogs and i just last night told a young Lady that is getting her baby soon about this and to not let her have any Greenies- I know some of you have dodged the bullet but don't be fooled and find out when its too late . Just my opinion based on what happened as I had both babies autopsied to be sure of what went wrong in these young dogs. |
