harness that she will not get out of....
 
it seems that every harness that I have purchased for Bella up to this point she has been able to slip out of while we are outside and then I have to chase frantically for her. It is scary because she is faster than I and I never would want her to go beyond my sight...does anyone else have problems with this? Is there a harness that is made more for safety so they can not come out of it??

I never had this problem ... but it sounds like you need to get her a body suit.

she is about 7 lbs and the only ones that I have tried are step-in-harnesses and one crappy one that I got from PETCO that was worthless.

I used to have that problem when Rusty was little, so I made my own harnesses that fasten with velcro and a safety pin (diaper pin) on the back, not underneath. I had an eBay store at one time and sold several. I will have to review how to attach a picture and show you a picture.

the problem with Bella is she backs right out of the harness, if she gets at the right angle and starts moving backwards while I am pulling forwards she comes right out of it and off she goes running like crazy and my heart starts pounding and then I am running around like a nutcase.

Your harness is too big. Try a smaller one, it should fit snuggly. If you can't find the right size, Chattie's Mom makes wonderful custom fit silk harnesses.

I know exactly what you are talking about. My harness fastens just above the shoulder blades, very tightly, and I have never had Rusty back out of one. You see the diaper pin can be adjusted so that the harness fits tightly and she can't get loose with a diaper pin adjusted correctly. My harnesses were made of cloth.

Try a puppia harness.It fits over her head and the strap is around her chest. If she has a 10inch neck I would go with the small size.

I use this one for my 3 yorkies and I like them a lot.

Coastal Size Right Harness by Top Paw&reg - Collars, Leads & Tags - PetSmart.

But maybe you should buy a bodysuit harness,that should stay on.

Like someone said, the harness you are using is too big... Can you sew? Make it smaller by sewing back and forth....take up the loops....

Also I have never trusted those plastic buckles and anything that fastens underneath with velcro. Both wear out. I also tighten by sewing the loops on any storebought harness for Rusty because storebought harnesses loops will come undone over time.

Safety is most important to me. Looks are secondary.

I designed these because there were no harnesses small enough for him when he was a baby, the plastic buckles stopped working and would come undone and I didn't want him wearing a cat harness.

Chatties mom Cindy makes the best harness that I have ever found. I tried them all then once i got one from her, I will never go any where else for one

I just bought puppia step-in harnesses for both Tino and Lola and couldn't be happier with them. They are super secure with velcrow and a snap closure and they don't pull at their sensitive necks when they are trying to run away from me..hehhee.

I had the same problem with Murphy about a month ago. He got out of his harness that had velcro and a snap. He was headed for a 4 lane highway. I researched harnesses after that. Murphy is also 7 lbs. I tried on Puppia vests. The one size wouldn't fit over his head and the next size was too big. I ended up getting a Buddy Belt. It is pricey, but I love it. It is a leather step in harness and it buckles. Murphy adjusted to it instantly. If you are interested PM me and I will give you the website where I found one at a very good price.

I recommend 2 harnesses:

#1 Chattiesmom's harnesses are great! Send in your measurements and she'll make you a beautiful silk harness that won't matt your yorkies hair.

#2 Buddy Belts....this is also a step-in design that is meant to fit snuggly. It's done up with a buckle on the back and you should be using one of the middle holes. There is no way your yorkie will wiggle out of this one, or chew it (as long as you buy the right size).

My Tootie is a major PULLER... I was afraid of even bringing him outside(YES I know he needs more training)...
His harness fro Chattiesmom is super. I have them for Hope too and they work perfectly.

The harnesses we had from PetSmart were chewed up within a week and one in two days...some of it due to teething. The Puppia and Gooby harnesses are mesh around the neck, softer and more comfortable...adjustable straps that are wide around the chest. I did have to take some stitches to make the neck smaller...maybe that would help Bella.

I give another vote for Buddy Belts. Buster has one and it fits him quite closely (and comfortably). There is absolutely no strain on his neck, and there's also no way for him to wiggle free from it.

Try a large bunny harness. It is exactly like the ferret harness but bigger. Onni is so tiny we had to buy her a ferret harness and since it fits like a jacket she is not going to get out of it. I bought mine at the feed store. When she outgrows her ferret harness I am buying her the larger Bunny harness. Wow, this harness brings back memories of when I first got my Wookie in 2005. I didn't know anything about harnesses, didn't know about YT, and bought this one for him at Walmart because it fit him during that time. But of course, he grew out of it in like a month. :rolleyes:

I'm selling ChokeFree harnesses on my website if anyone is interested :thumbup:. :D

I had intended to include a picture of Buster with his Buddy Belt, but I had to use a generic picture in my previous post.

Here's one of him with his Buddy Belt. He is 3.5 pounds and wears a size 2.

I got my buddybelt. The best step in leather harness ever. Bella will never get out of this one.
