Pet Stairs??? I was thinking about getting pet stairs for my bedroom since my bed sits 27 inches off of the floor. Alley wants to sleep with me but after I fall asleep, I'm so afraid he'll jump down and hirt himself. Anyone else have these and if so, where did you get them from? Petsmart has some but they are only 18 inches high and I'm afraid that's not tall enough. Ideas, anyone?? |
make youre own????? someone else on here made pet stairs and they turned out really cute ... i was going to make some, but toby prefers to leap off the bed anyways  |
Here are some more steps: http://www.ruffruffandmeow.com/doggie_step/ Making your own is a good idea too :D |
My experience is that they may use the steps to go up, but if they are large enough to be able to leap onto say...the bed or couch w/o the use of the steps, they will tend to just jump off, rather than use the steps. |
There are lots of pet steps on the web for ordering and I think they are a safety necessity for all yorkies who will develop bad arthritis when they get older if they are allowed to repeatedly jump up and down on and off of high furniture. Yorkies do like to jump and they seem so athletic but it is important to train them not to jump from heights that are too much for their small structures. I have bought or "fashioned steps for every piece of furniture in my home because my yokries are allowed on the furniture and I don't want them to have painful joint problems later in life. You are smart to get them the steps. In my bedroom I used some decorative stackable suitcases and an ottoman. |
1 Attachment(s) I bought foam blocks from www.efoamstore.com and covered them in fabric, it was easier for my girls to go up them since I made them tiny increments. |

That is a really cute idea. I have preslee trained pretty much to jump off the couch onto a pillow and jump off the bed onto the dog bed that is next to the bed. The only way she will go down stairs is if there is clothes on the stairs. We use the bottom landing when you go to the basement as our laundry hamper so we just open the door and toss the clothes down. It is pretty cute watching her hop from clothing to clothing going down the steps though. LOL |
i found some at gwlittle.com that i'm going to order for harley - he still has at least 2 more weeks in his kennel but hopefully I'll be able to train him to use the steps once he's out so he never gets hurt again. - I had to order a new crate and found a cover on their site and they actually called me back to let me know where to order the crate since they didn't carry it. - Check them out. Thanks! Thanks for all of the suggestions! |
I am thinking about making my own stairs too. Ok,ok, not me, but my bf will make them... but anyway. I want to prevent any future injuries or arthritis in Deegan. Don't know if he'll use them, but I will try. |
It doesn't even have to be stairs. My dad made our dogs a ramp out of plywood, 2x4s, and carpet, and it works GREAT ;) |
I told my hubby to make some stairs for Gucci being that he is a carpenter. But he is being lazy so Im still waiting. I my try Britts idea and do it myself. :) |
Check these stairs out... 1 Attachment(s) I'm not handy enough to make my own, but someone on YT had mentioned these little step stools from Target( $25). There are 2 steps, and the top one opens up for storage where I keep his brush etc.. I went and got some of the steps, bought some of those 99 cent rubber mesh placemats, and staple-gunned them to the steps for traction. Works great! Got blue placemats for the den. Tan for the bedroom. Little Dublin loves them, but still scares me a little the way he flies up and down them! Better than jumping, I guess... |

That is a great idea, I bought the steps at Target on clearance but they are so smooth that Baili slips on them. I tried covering with carpet but they looked horrible! I will try the placemats! Thanks :) |

I love that picture and what a great idea!!! I bought my stairs which are aprox. 24 inches tall from The Unfinished Furniture Store in my area....only problem with those is they are STILL unfinished :D |
I ordered Rowdy some steps from the Harriet Carter catalogue. They are foam and covered with a woolly fabric and are very light to carry around. I keep them next to my husband's chair so Rowdy can get up on his lap. I bought the 3-step stairs and they are not tall enough for him to get onto our bed, but they make 5-step stairs too, which would, I think, be tall enough. Rowdy will not jump off the bed, at least not yet, we lift him up and down, but when he gets older and if he shows signs of jumping, then I will get the 5-step set. I'm thinking of getting another 3-step set to keep in my office, so that he can get up on my chair when he wants. We also keep a small box covered with a towel on the floor in front of the couch in our den so he can get up on the couch - we are a VERY informal family! :p |
LvLaila, The watermelon shirt is really cute. I saw it at http://www.AccentsTreasuresandGifts.com and the designer is tres chic amis. Gabby |
ok, wait. you guys are telling me that if i let my yorkie jump on/off the furniture it leads to arthritis?? or is it for the smaller yorkies? |
Yes, from what I have read, all Yorkies do have a tendency to get arthritis later in life. Some even a little sooner, so we have to protect them as much as we can. I hve pillows around the couch in our family room and Chloe jumps onto them. They are soft so it doesn't put force on her legs. She has already hurt her leg once just by running to fast and tripping over a rock!! So now, we have to really watch her, even when playing. |
