Washable Potty Pads We are new to the potty pad game. Our girls have always been trained to go outside. I never wanted to use potty pads indoors because I don't want them to think it is ever acceptable to eliminate inside the house. We now live in an apartment so I recently began training them to use potty pads out on the balcony. This way they are still going outside to do their business, but we don't have to walk them out to the grass in the complex in the middle of winter or bundle up in the middle of the night to take them out. I'm learning, however, that disposable pads are quickly going to start adding up! These suckers (especially the decent, absorbent ones) are going to take a chunk of the budget. I'm considering the washable kind to save money and be kind to the environment. My question is... will my girls become confused thinking any similar fabric surface will be okay to use? I don't want them to get the wrong idea. Thoughts? |
I just started using washable pee pads about a month ago from http://www.personallypaws.com/catalog I have the Blue Indicator Pads. I placed the old pads ontop of he new for about a week & they took to it very well. I will never use disposable pads or newspaper again. |
I buy mine from Little Bit here on YT. Here is a thread for what she has right now. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=107168 I had the same reservations. But if you put them "where" they are already used to going, you won't have any trouble. We also put them over the paper pad (with a bit of it sticking out) for a few days. They are wonderful. Getting near the edge of the paper (notorious Yorkie trick) is no longer a problem, because they are absorbant all the way to the edge. The prints are awesome and some are nearly impossible to see even see the stain on. They are so absorbant, that there are no more little footprints from stepping in the spot. Little Bit's quality is great. They are so nice, it was hard for me to let them pee on them at first. We only use the disposable now for traveling. |
I got mine from valethics.com. My boys do sometimes mistake rugs for potty pads, but since yours are still going outside, maybe it won't be an issue. If your baby is small you also may want to consider putting a barrier up so there could never be an issue of falling through. There have been a thread or 2 about bad things like that happening. Good Luck with the potty pads!! |

There's actually a secondary barrier up right now as well. Penny would use the potty pad if I restricted her movements while on a leash, but Riley would just sit on the pad and look at me, preferring to do her business anywhere else on the balcony. So I bought a little rabbit fence from the pet store and set it up on the balcony, with an opening backed up against our door. Now, I just open the door, and the girls step out into a 3x3 little pen that has a potty pad on the bottom. Now they have to use the pad. Ha! |
I highly recommend the pads from Nancy (Little Bit)....we have four of them and we wash them all the time...they still look like new!! |
I use disposable right now and have been since Meka was 9 wks... Now shes 8 mo's, and I will say that yes...those suckers add up quick :) However, I buy mine from walmart (the cheapest) and a pack of 40 usually lasts the whole month.... :p However, I have been entertaining the washable idea lately :) |

I too worried about the same thing when I decided to give it a try with mine. I was afraid that they will think they could go on anything like blankets, towels, etc. So the first day I got them, I put one of the dogs on the pad to go potty. They did right away and it couldn't have been easier. They now go on the washable pads only, they seem to know that is where they are suppose to go. They never went on anything else like a blanket or something similar. But you do want to try to keep the pad in one spot when they are learning so they will know that is where they are to go. I will never switch back to the disposable ones, I just love the washable ones, best money I ever spent on pads. |
I haven't made the switch to washable pads just because I'm afraid they will get confused. Last week I had my yoga mat left out ( I usually roll it up and put it away), and McKenzie used it like a potty pad, so I'm thinking that if I got anything fabric like, she would think it was acceptable to potty on blankies, ect. I know some have had good successes using them but I think we are going to stick with our disposable ones. pee-pads.com has good ones that are the most affordable I've seen and never leak :) Someone also recommended pishpads.com for their reusable pads. They are pricey, but are also machine washable and reusable and they don't appear to look like fabric :) |

How did you get them to stay in the stockings? |

You can by washable pads from any medical supplies store - they are the same ones they put on hospital beds. Cheap and durable - they are great. For the first little while, I put the washable pad on top of the disposable pad, and Spike soon got the message. |
