[News] Purebred pedigrees can boost profits This article is in the Tulsa World today it makes me so upset! Breeding purebred animals for a nationwide market is big business in Oklahoma.Oklahoma has a bustling business industry that places it among a handful of states supplying the nation with purebred puppies. While there are scant economic figures on the size of the industry, the profit margin is clear at the kennel level: One purebred puppy such as a Yorkshire terrier can bring $1,000 to $1,500. A litter of Yorkies can bring up to $6,000 for a breeder. Puppy sales are seasonal with prices soaring during Christmas and decreasing during the summer months. But a litter of registered Yorkies born in August can still bring $1,500 to $2,500 if marketed properly, breeders said. So sad :cry8: We went to Tulsa last weekend and on the way there (turnpike or 412 whatever that main road is), there were big signs for a "dog sale"....my DH said that he thought it was where breeders would bring their pups and sell them (kind of like a swap meet, but with dogs). I just makes me sooo mad!!! (aurgh) |
Yes it probably was. My DH said someone he knows who breeds and she was telling him that she went to a dog auction last weekend and bought some new dogs to breed and I just couldn't belive it. How can you go buy dogs to breed from an auction you know nothing about the dogs! Just makes me sick :sickie: |
I don't want to start anything, but I just don't understand how some people just breed and breed and breed those poor babies. The ones that are not thinking of those poor little babies...just the money. On the news the other night, somewhere in the area, they found a puppy mill out in the middle of nowhere....I don't think there was even a house....just crates and boxes of dogs. Most dogs were stolen and they have made their way back home, others are waiting to be adopted.......can you imagine someone being sooo cruel??? |
I didn't hear about that one that is just awful. I know that News 6 KOTV here in Oklahoma is doing a report on puppymills on their wednesdays news report. I' just so tired of people treating these animals like this and getting a slap on the hand when and if they are caught. |
This was on KFSM Channel 5 a few nights ago. I can't remember what was said, if they found the people in charge of it or what. Some animals were sick (lack of food/water and poor conditions).....some had developed eye infections and other minor problems that were easily treated. It was horrible. The reporter said that when they aired the story, the police station (from whatever town that was in) got numerous calls that they seen their dog on there (that is how they found out most were stolen)! HORRIBLE!!! |
This is so sad. I don't understand why or how people can treat any animal like this. I know some people say I go way overboard with my Toby but that is just how I feel about him. I mean you don't have to treat them like actual children but that doesn't mean you have to mistreat them . I don't understand how some people can think animals don't have any feelings. I could never be so cruel to an animal. |
:goodpost: Thank you for sharing the article. I am still fighting with a backyard breeder here in FL. Thankfully, I adopted my little girl from Glenda Beavers of Tsa-La-Gi. She is contentious breeder and seller of yorkies. Her yorkies are AKC registered. She was concerned about the flight duration the layovers and the temperature when she shipped her to me. When I got my Nina here my baby was in terrific shape and healthy. To date, my Nina is healthy and doing great. I got lucky by researching the breeder. It would be great if there was a way to get truthful info on a breeder in one place so that we can all help puppy mills and backyard breeders out of business. |
Glenda is very nice. After we lost our Newman to cancer I spoke to Glenda and she offered me a young male (I think five or six months old) whose coloring was slightly off and could not be shown. He was small around 4 lbs. She offered him to me dirt cheap shipped for that price. I really fell in love with him. He was beautiful but my heart just wasn't ready, but still I won't forget her kindness. We now have a five month old Yorkie girl that we got out of rescue (2 lbs. 11 oz) otherwise I would have def. went to Glenda for a little one. Her dogs are beautiful too. Very beautiful. Elaine |
Jenn218, yes, I can imagine someone being so cruel. It's sad but that is the nature of the world we live in. I don't want to get into a whole religion, state of moral decay debate or anything but turn on the nightly news and look at what people are doing to their fellow man (and woman) and no one should wonder why these people have no trouble doing things like this to "some dumb animal" (probably their thoughts, not mine). I'm a firm believer that everything, living or otherwise, was put on this earth for man to use and enjoy responsibly. That doesn't make it OK to abuse the gifts we've been given. And who on this board doesn't believe that the love of an animal, Yorkie, Poodle, Cat, Goldfish or whatever isn't one of the greatest gifts of all. I rank it way up there, just below the love of and for my children. Well, my human children, not my adopted, four-legged variety ;-) Of course, I'm pretty sure your question was rhetorical but still... Everyone is right though, this is a very sad situation. I just don't think it's right to breed the same animals over and over. I mean, sure more and more people are wanting Yorkies (or poodles or pit bulls or whatever) and they have to come from somewhere, but, still. This is just taking things way too far. - Byron Followell |
