HI everyone-this seems to have turned into a heated debate...just wanted to share my story. I owned (RIP) an American Staffordshire Terrier (aka pit bull) a few years back. He was the sweetest and gentlest dog. Thought he was well...the size of a yorkie...anyway, my mother was out walking him one day in broad daylight and out of nowhere, came this Chow. With no provocation whatsoever, the Chow started attacking my mother and my dog. My poor Destiny was trying so hard to defend my mother and himself, he was wrapping himself around my mother with his leash and got bit numerous times because of it as did my mother. If it wasn't for a kind man that saw what was happening and came out with a bat...I dont know what would have happened. I believe, from what I have been told, that he struck the animal on his backside. The dog backed off and ran back to his yard. His owner was an arrogant bastard (excuse my french) and was laughing at the whole scene. I am SO happy that that man used the bat on that dog. I am glad he didnt kill the dog, but I think it was justified to prevent my mother and dog from being severely harmed and I truly thank him. Now on the other hand, I have a pretty decent background with Amer. Staff. Terriers as my cousins and myself owned them for years. I know they are just as strong as Rottweilers. Now, for me to believe this woman strangled an "attacking" Rottweiler is hard for me to grasp. My cousins dog was 130lbs as well, and I couldnt even WALK him he was so strong and would pull me down the block. If this dog was fighting her back, there is NO WAY she would have managed to strangle it. I think there are definite pieces to the story missing... oh and Kristy I am soooo sorry to hear about ur cousin. My prayers are with you. |
Kristy - My heart breaks for you over the loss of your cousin. I am so saddened to hear of this news and please know you are in my thoughts. :( Schatzie sends her puppy hugs to you and Stewie. |
Kristy I am terribly sorry about your cousin. I am sure your family is in shock. I think this woman could have gotten her dog away without killing the other dog. It just seems seh went a step too far and id overreact in my opinion. |
I feel badly now about using Kevin as an example of murdering and relating it to a dog. It has just not sunk in yet that he is not going to be around anymore :'( Thanks everyone for your well wishes for my family. I'm sure I can look back on them more when it actually SINKS IN that he is gone. |
Kristy, Mocha and I are really sorry to hear about your cousin.. That is such a sad story!! You and your family are in my prayers Mocha sends Stewie puppy licks and kisses |
My kids, my dogs...I am going to defend them in any way I can from human, or animal. Kristy, I am sooo sorry about your family's loss. you guys are in our prayers! |
So I guess the rotty was staked in her own yard and the lady went over to her yard and grabbed her after the yorkies went over and caused the problem,no I don't think so, any one knows that the rotty was not contained or it couldn't have grabbed the yorkie, now I dont think the stiuation was good no matter what, but it never would have happened if the rotty was in its own yard,so prosicute the rotty owner for not taking care of the pet in the proper way...if my yorkie went to someone elses yard and got bit,it would be my fault for not watching them, they are required to be in a fenced yard unless on leach with us...thanks for letting me give my openion |
I know exactly what to think. of course she should have defended herself and i feel bad that it attacked her yorkie but she didn't have to do that! she did intentionally kill the dog if she was twisting his collar and slamming him against the house. I am sooooooooooooooooooo mad right now i think the keybords gonna brake. thats teriable. obviously the owner wanted to get the dog off and get it under control but the woman killed it!!! that makes me sick. and i know this is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY different than what most of you wrote but that's just how i am when it comes to animals. it doesn't matter if they are a 2 pound toy fox terrier or a 180 pound newfinland. none should be killed that brutally. i don't think it was the owners fault. people always say that but its not always true. sometimes stuff just happens. i'm soooooo mad right now. i feel teriable about the yorkie but what that woman did, imo, was completley unesscary and cruel. |
Admin..... did you remove my reply from this thread? |
I am crying for the situation of mommy and Yorkie but in my opinion, mommy got carried away. Why wasn't she checking on her baby when she got him free? That would have been my FIRST priority. Was there blood? It didn't sound like it, in my understanding that is what sets most people off, blood. You never know what you will do or how you will react until you actually get into a situation. I can SAY that I would have stopped beating that dog when he let go of my baby but would I? I like to think so. I think the mommy was wrong to go on and on. If the dog wasn't defending himself, and that's the way it sounded, why didn't she realize it? I think there were wrongs on both sides, beginning with the Bull terrier being loose. When my kids fight I try to get to the bottom of how it started so I can show them how to prevent it next time. These dogs can't talk and the story I read apparently didn't say what the boys story was. As someone else said could the Yorkie have been defending his territory? It doesn't sound from the hurts the Yorkie suffered that the Bull Terrier was trying to kill him. And if something that much bigger than me tried to grab me in it's mouth, I don't think I would be holding still. Which would compound the injuries. I wouldn't know the intentions of something that suddenly grabbed me up. How long does it take to strangle something? If the Yorkie owner didn't have control of herself enough to know the dog wasn't fighting back, how could she have been in such a frenzie when she didn't know how badly her baby was hurt? Possibly the Yorkie owner didn't realize the dog wasn't fighting back because the Bull owner was fighting to get her loose? Again the story didn't covered it. Maybe the best way to handle the situation is for the Bull Terrier owner to subtract the cost of her dog from the total bills of the Yorkie and both of the owners let it go. |
[QUOTE=SoCalyorkiLvr][COLOR=Teal]Murderers are someone's child. All criminals have parents and they are someone's child. This is no excuse for not "stopping the crime" being committed and trying to save the victim. ok i know i already posted but here's more. The crime was stopped! even if it weighed as much as her it still could ahve torn her to shreds with hardley any strength. if it was sitting there taking it it wasn't agressive. and the yorkie only had a few marks on his stomach....? sounds like nothing at all was happening because that dog also could have killed the yorkie the second it got in her mouth. the victom was already inside safe and ok. the crime was already stopped but there was another crime, a new crime, being commited. she had no reason whatsoever to kill the dog. ok maybe i would hit it but i would never kill a dog or any animal! when my dog rusty was attacked by a pitt i didn't know what to do. i was 6. i heard the man cheering the dog on. then a nice man walked by and got the pitt off rusty. the dog had to be put down but i would have been soooooooooo much happier if it had been the owner. but that dog was agressive and you could tell. my uncle also has a rottie named lacey. she sounds a lot like this dog and she would never hurt anything! IMO |
MeganS~ You took my quote and used it out of context but I know this thread has gotten sort of confusing. That quote was from a discussion with Stewie's mom. I was using an analogy about the fact that just because a criminal is someones's child doesn't mean they should get away with a crime. We were no longer talking about the incident that started the thread. I think that none of us really know what happened because we weren't there and the article is pure hearsay. We can only talk in generalizations about what we might do in a similar situation. I was just surprised that some people said they wouldn't defend their dog if he/she was attacked. |
Megan, you are wise beyond your years! I am very impressed with how mature you are. Your mom did a good job raising a smart, self thinking young lady. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders. Give mom a hug and tell her thanks. :) |
socalyorkilvr-sorry i didn't realize that. i defenatly would defend my dogs (rusty or tucker)without hesitation. and i agree that none of us really know what happened. but the point is she killed the dog and she didn't have to. once again sorry. lilly'smom-thank you. its weird she never did like animals that i liked(she's scared of horses, doesn't like cats, and the only dogs she ever really loved were holly, bandit and now tucker)but we still have 2 dogs,2cats,a hamster,a turtle, and fish, and i ride horses. i'll never know... i think i get it from my cousin....? thanks again! |

I dont believe anyone said they would not defend their dog if it was attacked. Most people were disagreeing with what the woman did. I was also referring to your statement about how you would not hesitate to kill the animal if it was you. Which is you what you would do and thats fine, I was just stating my opinion. I didnt want to upset anyone I was just very upset that some people would look at killing so lightly. As I said before "TWO WRONGS DONT MAKE A RIGHT" "Thou shall not kill" is one of our TEN COMMANDMENTS. That was my opinion. SoCalyorkiLvr Please dont take offense to what I had said, everyone has their opinion. Dont get me wrong I would defend my 5 year old daughter and my two dogs in a heartbeat. I was only saying that I would not kill them. In my mind that makes me no better than them. I would most definitly like to be posted as to how the case is going with the woman. Does any one know what the update is? |
That whole incident just sickens me  |

I am not Christian either |
I am sure this woman thought she was doing the right thing if someone attacked one of my babies i dont know what i would do i have a very quick temper and would probably attack it...but not kill it there is a point when that little voice in your head should say STOP. |
wow i dont read posts for one day and see this. I promised myself I wouldnt get involved in a controversial thread again but oh well here goes nuthin. first and most importantly Kristy Im so very sad to hear about your cousin my thought and prayers go out to you and your family. Now as for the rottie... My husband raised rotts when he was younger if that rott was aggressive i truly dont think that the woman would have been able to kill it. The trainer i train my shepherd with also trains k9 patrol dogs & I gotta say i have seen what an aggressive dog can do. My 105 lb shep plays with macy( yorkie 2 1/2 lb) and sometimes he dont want to play and macy keeps going at him. Sometimes he goes down stairs to get away from her and sometimes he will bark at her loudly to scare away. I can tell you now i would never kill either dog. None of us was there when this rottie bit the yorkie, we all know yorkies tend to have big dog attitudes in lil dog bodies. Macy went after the lab across the street the other day and almost became lunch.. so we do not know that the yorkie didnt go there first. Once the yorkie was out of harms way the women should have called the proper authorities to handle the situation as to what happened and who was at fault. She should not have killed this animal in the manner that she did. I also think as much as we love our pets and treat them as our kids(myself included) You can not use them to compare in this situation. I am catholic and know the ten commandments but as where my children are concerned i would do whtever was needed to protect them. would I kill for them I wouldnt know till put in that situation. As for my dogs they are very very very special to me but we all shouldnt forget they are animals with distinct traits. All of them have the potential to be aggressive and I think we tend to forget that. My honest opinion is that that women was 100% wrong!!!!! You dont kill an animal in such an inhumane way. I dont care what the law says a murder is or a hero is. We are talking about being just plain cruel. |

Ok so matthew and i were at the dog park when someone took their small dog into the big dog section...a rather large greyhound attacked the small dog and wouldnt let go (luckily the little dog only ended up with a couple of puncture wounds) my husband said and i quote "if a dog had my dog and wouldnt let go i would choke it to death" and keep in mind this is my husband who has literally never hit anyone in his life...extreme passivist. So it just goes to show hurt someone or something someone loves and you will never know what that person will do. |
I feel badly for the dog with the puncture wounds, but your posts caused me to think: 1. Why did the person take her dog into the section where big dogs are? 2. Greyhounds who are raced and abused at tracks chase rabbits around as their 'bait". Maybe he was recently rescued (or maybe not so recently) and mistook the small dog for a bait rabbit. I don't think its that unlikely a reason. Just trying to look at it from the side of the Greyhound's owner. |
Oh i totally agree it was the small dogs owners fault i would never ever take toby to the big dog area and i thought the same thing that it probably saw it as a rabbit cause the small dog was a very hairy mix breed. Just saying more than anything my husbands reaction to the incident shocked me because i hadnt told him about this post. |
This story hits so close to home for me. My 2.5 lbs Gus was attacked by a 75 lbs German Sheperd just 3 weeks ago. My son took Gus out to do his biz. when the Sheperd charged for him from across the street. It all happened so fast. My daughter who is 8 was playing with her friends was also outside when it happened. The Sheperd grabbed Gus and was shaking him. I heard my daughter yelling for me so I run out and seen my son with a rake running after the dog. Luckly he dropped Gus and ran home. I can still hear my poor Gus crying. My daughter picked Gus off of the street and ran inside. At first glance he looked ok just a bit scared. But when we were checking him out he collapsed and was having trouble breathing and his eyes were rolling back. I lost it! My husband got him and rushed him the local emergency vet. Waiting for that call was torture. And when it finally came I can hear it in my husbands voice that things were not good. I then went across the street to tell the owner what had happened. And that dog was sitting right in front of the door and was not about to let me approach. So I went home and called the police. But you can best believe I had my bebe gun ready just incase he came back to my yeard. I'm so glad it didn't come to that. Animal Control came and took a report. They then went to the owners house and told them what had happened. They would not surrender the dog so they fined them. Told them they were liable for any expences. (which they did pay) And if they had to come out again they were going to take the dog. And you can best believe I will call if I see that dog out loose again! They really didnt think Gus was going to pull through. His chest was full of fluid and his left lung was collapsed. And he did have quite a few of puncture wounds. They worked thier magic and he servived the night without having to operate. 24 hours later they took out the oxygen tube and he was breathing on his own. The next day they took him out of ICU, by that night they took the tupe out of his chest that was draining the fluid. And was home 2 days after that. I am so grateful and thank my luck stars that he made it!!! He came home a bit battered and bruised but his is pretty much back to his oldself. Looking like a 2 lbs lion because the had to shave his beautiful long hair. I don't care just as long as his ok. His hair will grow back. |
Latuya: That is such a relief that Gus is okay. Things like this can happen so fast it's quite scary. Gus is a little survivor, what a scary episode. Is he back to "normal" now? Welcome to YorkieTalk, by the way! :) |
Isn't it sad at the end of the day it's the attacking dog that may lose it's life when it's the people who own it that should never allow their animal to be in a position to attack ? When we call anyone about out of control dogs we put that dogs life at risk and it isn't the dogs fault ! I wonder if it would make people concentrate on contoling their dog if it was their life on the line not the dog's ? Very glad to hear your dog was OK Latuya. |
