[News] Woman Eats Dog Food, Foams at Mouth An Ottawa woman trying to trick her terrier into trying a new kind of food ate it herself and developed symptoms, including foaming at the mouth, of illness. The stunt-gone-wrong began earlier in the month before a North American recall of moist pet foods was issued, but Elaine Larabie suspects she and her new 1-year-old pet, Missy fell victim to tainted food, the Ottawa Citizen reported Tuesday. She said once her dog started eating the food, she stopped, but both fell ill, and for three days she experienced foaming at the mouth, problems urinating, vomiting and loss of appetite. The dog required veterinary care but will recover. Larabie is awaiting lab results from her hospitalization, the newspaper said. Larabie said when she contacted Iams, the company confirmed the food she and the dog ate was affected by the recall and likely was contaminated with rodent-killing chemical sprayed on Chinese wheat. She said the company assured her they will cover her medical bills and she hasn't decided yet whether to sue, the Citizen said. http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Quirks/...-081944-7331r/ |
There must really have been A LOT of poison in that dog food! |
How awful! Thank heavens both owner and pet will be ok. I would have never even thought to eat the dog food first. I have to say that was the dumbest thing I ever heard of. Who in their right mind would try and trick a dog by eating their food to show them it's good? Strange IMO. |
I know it is not supposed to be a funny story. But I can just picture the lady spooning herself the food to entice her dog. LOL. Hope they are both ok though. |
Those Nutro Healthy Desserts... When I first bought them, they surely smelled good. I tried one before giving it to my dog. Neither one of us was crazy about the taste though  edit: I'm glad the lady and her terrier are OK |
with all that is going on into today world...i feel a little scared now of what can and can't be feed to my babies...nor myself... |
Did they ever find out if the rat poisening was intentional? I am assuming it was as it would be hard for it to accidentley fall into wheat gluten or whatever it was. |
You would be surprised at how many seniors out there that are so poor that they have resorted to eating pet food. I've seen it too. So sad. |
This is a sad story - but honestly, even though I feed my little guy human grade food, I certainly would not actually ingest the food to trick my dog into eating it. I hope she and her pup are both well now. |
thats awful!!! i would be scared to death if that happened to me... i hope her and her dog are okay! |
dang !! all these recalls and pets getting sick it makes me worried about what i feed my babies. i hope they get better soon...our prayers are w/ them. :( |

I remember years ago when sunlight dish soap came out. It was advertised as having real lemon juice in it. Supposedly someone got sick after making lemonade with it...duh! I have pretended to eat the dog food before to get Chloe to eat, but I would never actually do it (except for the stuff I made myself). |
Sorry to sound cold, but what an idiot. Of all the ideas, why would you think of THAT to make your dog like his food? |
