[News] Yorkshire Terrier Swallows 2-Inch Sewing Needle
 

PDSA vets got straight to the point when cute puppy, Saffy, from St Budeaux in Plymouth, was brought in to see them coughing and struggling to breathe. It turned out she had swallowed a 2-inch long sewing needle and thread which had pierced the back of her throat.

Saffy?s owner, Susan Natkaniec, says that although the six-month-old Yorkshire Terrier enjoys exploring their home, the only items she has ever shown any interest in were the dustpan and brush, which often ended up by Saffy?s bed! But when Saffy discovered Susan?s sewing box one day, her inquisitive nature got the better of her and the mischievous puppy helped herself to a reel of dark blue thread complete with sewing needle!

Susan comments: ?I caught Saffy playing with the cotton reel, but had no idea the needle was missing. It was only when she started making retching noises and pawing at her mouth that I realised something was wrong and she needed to see a vet straightaway.?

Saffy was taken to Plymouth PDSA PetAid hospital where a long thin object was discovered at the back of her throat. PDSA Veterinary Surgeon, Eva Rodriguez, comments: ?Saffy must have caught sight of the shiny needle and while playing with it, accidentally gulped it down. She was very lucky not to have swallowed it!?

Saffy?s throat was very sore, so she was given medication to reduce the swelling. After a few hours rest, she was bright, alert and very hungry!
Susan says: ?It was heart-breaking to see Saffy so distraught. She?s usually so happy and bursting with energy. I was so relieved when PDSA gave her the all clear.

?Although she?s been on her best behaviour since the accident, my sewing box is now locked away and the whole family makes sure we don?t leave any small items lying around the house, just in case!?

Glad they managed to sort her out.

A labrador puppy over here once swallowed a ten inch long kitchen knife. They showed the x ray of it on TV. They got it out & it was fine after.

You can't leave anything lying about eh? :(

Poor Saffy... what a terrible ordeal for her and her mommy to have to go thru... :( Glad she will be better soon!:)

OMG, that's awful. Thank goodness they were able to remove it. Poor baby. :(
