The chip is only the size of a grain of rice. |
Riley breezed right through it - didn't seem to bother him at all. Even so, it would be a small price to pay to keep our babies safe. I'm glad you are getting your little ones microchipped! |
Pricing So Out Of Sight Has Caused This My Opinion Is Pricing Of $2,500 Is What Now Is Causing The Problem, The Yorkie Has Always Been A Cute Small Terrier To Have, But You Start Putting Big Bucks On Them, We Now All Have To Worry On Home Invasion And Just Walking Them Down A Sidewalk. I'm Furious With All Of This.. My Jd Hangs Out Looking Right Out The Front Window, That Dosen't Leave Me Feeling Secure On His Safety.. And How Is The Chip Going To Help Unless They End Up At A Pound?? Do We Get Vets To Read All Yorkies Brought In When Not A Customer They Know Has A Yorkie?? I'm Quite Upset With This New Trend To Steal Our Little Pups... Ginger:( |
I am involved in rescue and I can tell you a lot of what the problem is. The AKC keeps ranking these pups and they, in my opinion, do not do enough in terms of educating people about the pitfalls. SURE..they are adorable pups, but they are terriers. I hate that Yorkshire Terriers are ranked number two in popularity. In my opinion, unscrupulous breeders and the AKC are part of the problem...NOT the solution. I am not saying that there are not reputable breeders...there are just FAR more that are NOT. I have seen so many yorkies get turned in to shelters and rescues for stupid reasons like "they bark too much", "they are hard to housebreak", "they don't want to sit in a carrier". UH...these are yorkie traits and if people would take the time to educate themselves about them PRIOR to just obtaining them, these things could be avoided. It is bad enough that people get rid of their pets for divorces, new living conditions ("cannot take my pup with me"...then find ANOTHER place)...and then we have the idiots who dump the seniors. The poor babies give unconditional love all their lives only to be dumped when they NEED the love back. Sorry about the rant...but what I see on a daily basis turns my stomach. Microchips are great BUT they also can be removed. All it takes is someone with money who can get someone to do it. AND....vets do not routinely microchip so a person could take a dog they have stolen to a vet and never be discovered. There is NO replacement for walking your dog at ALL times ON A LEASH...NEVER leaving them outside in your yard unattended..even for a MINUTE....NOT using doggy doors....using baby gates that prevent them from gaining access to a room that has an outside door. If that is not possible...put a LEASH at the door and put it on your pup BEFORE opening the door. The list goes on and on about how to protect them. I also have an alarm system in my home and after seeing that incident in California I am thinking of putting a video system in. That is what got those pups back! |
thanks ladyjane for your reply, it hit the mark, and welcome to YORKIETALK TOO!!! GINGER AND JD |
Thank you. :) A correction to my post is that the vets do not routinely SCAN for a microchip. So...anyone could take a pup in for care and it not be detected that it was stolen. |
I applaud Lady Jane My animals mean the world to me. Not because they are Yorkies because they are mine. I am responsible for them. I have to keep them on a leash and know that in this world people can be cruel. It is so sad that people have to steal when the selters are filled with dogs looking for homes. I have neighbors who were breeders of Lhasas and people broke their fences and stole dogs but they just put them in the back yard and let them go. The puppies would go thru the fence and people would pick them up and keep on going. They did not care. I have started microchipping we have fences the dogs are never alone and when I walk them one of us will be on the outside watching. I am a little thick in the hips but when it comes to my animals this lady can handle. And I pity the fool who thinks they can grab one of mine cause my male will try to take you fingers off. He is the protector. |
My vet scans every dog and cat that walk through the doors. I would hope all vet would do this... I don't let my Yorkies outside without me. They are either on a leash held by me or in their fenced play yard with me right there or at least in the yard where I can see them while doing yard work. If I go in - so do they - if I go to a different part of the yard where I can't see them - they come with or go in the house. I have thought about those stickers, too. Even the bumper stickers like "I Love My Yorkie." That is just advertising you have them.. or the cute signs you can put in your yard like, - Yorkie Crossing or Guarded by Yorkies. No way would I tell people I own Yorkies like that! Sad world where you have to be so darn cautious with a dog!!! :( Then think of how much worse it is for our skin kids! Geez, we won't even go there... |
I Never thought it would happen to me But it did !!!! When I first heard of microchipping right after I got Oliver .... I thought he is too small and it will hurt him and besides that I had never lost a dog , or a child , and if you are cautious it wouldn't happen now.,,,, Well in Jan. I was proven wrong.... it was a freak thing both of my dogs ran out the front door as I was bringing in groceries..... my hubby was working on painting in the bedroom and he called me to the back of the house to help him and Ididn't realize that they got out.... ( that never happened ) I heard Sophie barking and ran to the door and my Oliver was gone...., it happened so quick... they never would go anywhere without the other one... When I dove in to the driveway there was 3 addtional cars at one of my neighbors homes and they were standing outside .... when I went back all the cars were gone and so was my Oliver.... I know someone in one of those cars snatched him.,,, My neighbors deny it and I can't do anything about it... I put out flyers signs posters everything.... but still don't have him back . Microchipping would not help this case but if he ever escapes them , then I would have a slim chance of getting him back... My new baby was microchipped before we left the Breeder..... NEVER SAY NEVER |
I have seen GPS collars but the microchip is only a chip with a number that can be scanned and it tells the vet who the owner is. If my yorkie was stolen and never taken to a vet , I could never find him. Also when a person comes in to a vet for the first time. The vet never scans the dog because it's a new patient. I've had 2 vets and neither scanned my dog.It was only after I got curious and asked my current vet if she could show me how it works. It looks sort of like a price scanner and she scans his back and a number shows up. She types that number in a website and all my info shows up. I have thought about getting a GPS collar but if my dog is missing ,anyone who finds him might remove the collar :( My dogs NEVER are left outside for a second. I\'m just paranoid like that... Paranoia is a good thing...it will save your pupsters! Beats anything out there....I do not let mine out of my sight...EVER! There are too many kooks out there...ready to climb fences, break into homes...the list goes on and on. Really sick. I have an alarm system in my home and next will be a video system. I, too, wish all vets would scan for microchips, but the sad reality is that they do not. Plus, many fools take these poor babies and do not care about proper vet care. I get sick thinking of where they end up. |
This make me worry sick how ppl now a days will do to get one !! Gezz go buy your own !! why do you have to steal other ppls !! |
