Federal: Urge your Representative to Protect Pets in Emergencies! Support H.R. 3858 Bill No. H.R. 3858 Primary Sponsors Representative Tom Lantos (D-CA) ASPCA Position Support Action Needed Send a letter to your representative now and urge him or her to support The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS)! Take Action Now! https://secure2.convio.net/aspca/sit...mepage&id=1805 In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, it has become overwhelmingly apparent that provisions need to be made for our trusted companions in major disaster and emergency situations. The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS) would amend a federal law called the Stafford Act. It would require the Director of FEMA, in approving standards for State and local disaster preparedness plans, to ensure that the plans take into account the needs of individuals with household pets and service animals. Many Katrina evacuees and disaster victims were forced to leave their pets behind when they evacuated their homes, because no provisions had been made to evacuate companion animals along with their families. The emotional trauma of those forced to leave their pets behind and the suffering of thousands of animals was compounded by the health and safety risks that resulted from so many abandoned animals in one area. Conversely, many pet owners, knowing their companion animals could not accompany them, decided to stay in their homes with their pets, further aggravating human rescue efforts. The PETS bill would help ensure that this situation does not repeat itself if another major disaster strikes! Contact your representative now and urge him or her to support and cosponsor H.R. 3858! Take action now! Write to your representative and urge him or her to support and cosponsor this important legislation! |
I just sent a letter to my rep for Kansas! |
I just sent one to our representative in Florida. Thanks for forwarding this. |
This amazes me how so few people viewed or responded to this thread. |
I just sent one to our representative in Ma. I also sent some e-mails to my friends. This is a great post and I hope that it helps! |
I read the post... don't give up yet! I live in Louisiana, in one of the damaged areas. Alot of friends have adopted pets that were left. Most of them said that their owners were found and the owners either said, put them to sleep, give them away or do what ever you need to do. My neighbors rescued a boxer, named him Lucky. He was found on a levee, he was there for 6 days before being rescued. His owner was contacted and they said to put him to sleep so the shelter that had him put him up for adoption. He is only 3 years old and so full of life! There were so many animals left behind. This bill needs to be passed!!! |
Sent in Ohio.. hope it makes a difference. |
Sent my letter off and forward this on to alot of my friends. Hopefully something will be done. |
