All these stories make me wonder if walking your dog is worth it, lucky for me Lola would prefer to play fetch indoors that go for a walk, |

I don't know if we have hawks here but I do know we have lots of crows and bald eagles. Elliot is 4.5 lbs and Duncan is 8 lbs. I just order a gate to go across my driveway so the whole yard would be enclosed and I could put them out in the yard without being on leashes but after reading these posts, I wonder if I should even spend the money. Does anyone know if crows carry off little animals? We have a lot of squirrels around the yards and I have never seen one carried off by the eagles. I am really worried now about putting them outside without me being right there with them. They love being outside though to run and play in the yard even to the extent of telling me they have to go out when they don't just so they can play. Duncan really loves zooming around the yard. |
Just a note from personal experience. I enclosed and covered a small area for my 'Littles' to safely romp, or so I thought. I do sit out with them (my excuse to continue smoking - I have a table, lights, a freezer, etc under a roof wrapped in a fence so I can play on the computer and chill with the dogs outside). I will never forget getting that being watched feeling and seeing the dogs alerting (strangley quietly) to something. I turned around to see a young hawk sitting on the gate less than 6 feet away from where I was sitting and talking to the dogs. He was watching the dogs. I have since been told that young, inexperienced raptors will attempt stupid stunts like that. Just being there with your dog on a leash may not be enough. I now run the little dogs with my large breed since Coulter seems to scare away the predators. Just be careful running big dogs with little dogs. It's sort of a no win situation. The things we do to protect our loved ones, huh? |
I had a close call with my Chihuahua when we moved here and have had friends that have had their Chi's and Yorkies taken by Hawks, Owls and Coyotes so I am crazy protective of mine. This summer I am making a predator free zone for my guys. I bought some aviary netting and wire and am putting this over our 25 x 50 foot dog kennel in the back. It is supposed to be strong enough to keep deer and coyote out so we should be good. |
I always make sure Ranger is protected wherever he goes. A few months back a rot tried to jump the fence until he heard a waring shot. |

So glad Cali made it. Brave little darling.:) I found this VERY interesting. Birds Of Prey - Answers.com |
We have ravens (larger than crown by a bit) here and a student of mine (grade 4) told me that a raven took his baby bunny. I dont trust any wildlife. |

Ye!meven the wild life folks that were involved in Cali's situation kept saying that it was unusual for a hawk to go after 3.5 pounds. But...I have heard of them taking rabbits that weighed that much, so who knows. From what I have learned - if they are hungry enough and especially if they have young, they will try anything. One ornithologist in my area said that some times if they can't lift the prey they will disable it with their talons and then just eat it on the spot rather than try to carry it away. Yuck!!! Anyway, I don't trust anything, any animal or any person around my baby any more. We got lucky once, I sure don't want a replay...and, Cali always watches what is above her now - birds, tall trucks on the highway, and people. She has developed what we call "the stance". The other day a blue jay kind of swooped at her to get her away from the bird feeder and she whirled around and assumed "the stance" And we all commented on it. Of course she does not get to go out by herself any more so we were right there. Funny thing was, she did not run to me when the bluejay swooped and I did not like that - I had to call her to me. Soooo, long story short , don't pay any attention to those stories of your dog is too big for a hawk and all that - keep your eyes on them!!!! |
At 11 lbs I hope my Gracie is too large for a hawk to consider flying away with but we do have hawks, eagles and vultures who circle in the area, mostly, I think, because of our high rabbit population. The possibility has crossed my mind, however... |
OMG! that's terrible. We have coyotes that have attached dogs in our neighborhood. I would never have thought to look to the sky for danger. Thank you. |
When I walk Cody my eyes are searching the woods and the sky, we have several predator birds, I see them flying from my back yard, due to 150 ft high Oak trees that form a canopy over the yard they can't swoop down, so we are safe, but on walks there is no tree coverage so I am vigilant, does not make walking him enjoyable but he needs to know where he lives if EVER he should get loose from the house and is good for keeping his nails trimmed. Cody weighs 12 lbs, but still I won't take a chance some crazy bird won't try it, their talons alone can kill or severally injure a small dog. Everyone should just be careful when out in their yard or walking their babies. |
Owls will swoop on them, also:eek: |
GASP! JRT's are a between 14-18#'s (I'm sure there's smaller & bigger, just like Yorkies)...they don't mention the weight, but sadly she was carried off by a hawk.:( Hawk Carries Away Family Dog In Lexington - LEX18.com | Continuous News and StormTracker Weather Posted: Aug 14, 2015 4:06 AM PST Updated: Aug 14, 2015 4:06 AM PST Hawk Carries Away Family Dog In Lexington A hawk recently attacked and carried away a family dog in a Lexington neighborhood. The bird attacked the 15-year-old Jack Russell Terrier named Destiny in the Plantation neighborhood, off Harrodsburg Road and Man O' War Boulevard. "She was getting pretty old. She was limping a bit. That would have probably attracted the hawk to some degree, an animal, you know, that was somewhat wounded," Bob Newbold said. The family actually installed decoys before the attack because of hawk sightings. Other neighbors have had close calls as well, and a hawk also attacked a chicken in the area. The Clays Mill Vet Clinic issued a warning to keep small pets on a leash and to take down bird feeders. Hawks are federally protected, and it is illegal to kill or injure them. |
We have Red Tailed Hawks in a tree at the back of our property, I never let our 2.8 pound yorkie outside with out me, but this makes me more afraid for Roxie. I will definitely keep a close eye on her |
Wow! Yorkies are tough little doggies!! Thanks for the heads-up about owls, too. I hear & see them all the time. I'll be keeping my baby on a leash. |
So sad for that lovely Yorkie that was attacked by a hawk. In fact I didn't know that hawks could attack Yorkie. Am so much worried about my Yorkie now. I will be very careful |
Thanks so much for letting me know. I'm going to be watching more carefully now. |
I have a series of 3 photographs of a red tailed hawk circling my Yorkie in Southern Oregon. The last of the 3 pics shows the hawk coming down for him. I happened to be photographing some items outside (I'm a freelance photographer) when I realized I was hearing 2 hawks communicating with each other (possibly) before one of them started his descent for my Yorkie. There was a man in a store in this town who told me he & his wife had a Yorkie who was on the ground next to them when an owl swooped down & took the dog. From that moment on, I never let my dog out without a leash & even when he goes out on the deck in the snow, I go with him. I've heard too many stories like this. There was an owl who swooped down & removed someone's hat off her head as she was bicycling along the golf path. Never let your Yorkies out alone where these raptors can grab them. They aren't even afraid of people. |
I always go out with my babies and sit there while they go out. They are never too far from me. Mia will be about 10-20 ft away and I still get super nervous. |
A Jack Russell terrier was taken in central Ky from a yard in a local neighborhood Their dog was old and not very strong but it weighed 8 to 10 lbs. |
OK...so we were on our walk this morning-on Long Island...Bethpage path...Chip started going berserk...practically climbed a tree! I thought he was going for a squirrel...looked up and snapped a photo of what I thought was a snowy owl...I posted it on my page and a few people told me it was a Hawk! My question is this...Everything Ive read says hawks are put off by shiny objects...would weaving a piece of tin foil around his leash or harness help? Are there any products like a mirrored collar? |
Update- Found and ordered this- I can put it on the snap of his harness so its on his back and wont drive him nuts... Blue LED Dog Bone Pet Safety Lights by FlashingBlinkyLights! |
Hawks This afternoon, I was walking Beanie around where my cousin lives. There are lots of trees, but not really "wooded area". All of a sudden, a hawk flies (didn't dive THANK GOD) by me, like a few yards from Beanie and I. Then the hawk goes onto a light pole and just looks at me walking. I scooped up my dog and kept walking. A woman had pulled into her driveway and asked me what was wrong and that she had seen me kind of freaking out. She said Oh my God, I have very small children, as she is looking at this giant hawk sitting on the pole right in front of us. The hawk finally took off from the light pole. I cannot believe the size of this creature. |
That is so scary. I am glad little Rocky is ok. My husband is always afraid of a hawk grabbing our little pups & my Phoebe is only 3#. How terrifying for the poor pups. Coyotes were brought in several years ago to kill the deer population. Now we still have them & they scare me to death. Some people down the road had put their little dog out to the bathroom & a coyote killed it. Just have to be very protective . |
Coyotes are early morning (dawn),night and evening (dusk) hunters, I have them in my area, I live in heavily wooded area. I am up at 4 / 4:30AM, Cody uses the deck for potty during these hours with me and my club out there with him. You MUST stay with your dog and that is still not a guarantee a coyote will not snatch your pup with you right there. I am 100 feet from the edge of woods, have spot lights facing woods and entire back yard is illuminated and I watch the wooded area while Cody decides where to potty. One cannot be to careful. |
I like in Pittsburgh suburbs, this is not the first Yorkie I have heard of getting attack. When I was at the vet last year there was a Yorkie who was a 9pd. He got attacked. It was horrible and it really affect him. I also have a lake house 2hrs away and we also have eagles. I am always outside with my babies. I use to let them run with the other dogs many people outside watching will long leads on there harness . But them my brothed brought it to my attention that it was extremely dangerous too. Think now thinking was not smart of me. So now I turned my two car garage that is attached to my house in a dog gym. The can run, play, have splash pool. They still go out to play but there is always more then 1 person and multiple dogs. Which two are there aunt and uncle who are large labs. Uncle gunner 120 pounds and would love to take brown a big bird and aunt Mazie another large lad does not like anyone messing with her puppies. A very unfriendly German shepherd got from his owner on a walk. And it took two people to get a uncle gunner calm down because he was not letting the dog near my babies. It such a very scary world for them. I could not live with myself if something happened to them that I could have helped. |
