I saw this when someone else posted about it yesterday and makes me very concerned since I feed NB to my three. WTH is wrong with these pet food companies?!?!?!?!

SCARY is all I can say- I saw this on a bunch of yahoo groups yesterday :( It is the chicken formula correct? Is it diamond or menu foods that manufacture for them? I have always thought this was a great company so very disappointed

How does salmonella get into a food supply (whether pet food or human food)? Salmonella is a FECES-BORNE bacterium. Aside from exposure to contaminated water or other unsanitary conditions, here's one way: A facility where food is processed or warehoused is INFESTED by pigeons. Salmonella comes from pigeon droppings and from dead pigeons. How can anyone think it's okay for that problem to be so prevalent in our food supply and in our pets' food supply? I don't keep the Chicken NB since Pebbles has a chicken and grain allergy. Isn't LA chicken based? When I fostered for IPPRA's they supplied the food for my foster and I had tried it then for her but she was very allergic.

I believe LA is chicken based as the rescue i got demi from recommended it so i looked into it back then unless things have changed

Yes, chicken and brown rice. Just enough starch to make the kibble also. Alot of dog foods use more because its a protein source. LA doesn't do that.

Boy it must be early~~I meant to say that Pebbles has a chicken and grain allergy. When I tried feeding the LA she was very allergic I believe to the chicken in the food. I am currently feeding the NB Lamb and Brown Rice. Whenever I have tried to add any type of chicken to her diet she immediately gets bad eye discharge and scratches like crazy. We just recently switched to the Lamb since NB changed the way they add sweet potato as their filler. So this leaves us with very few choices other then something that is LI with no SP starch or home cooking.

Thanks for the link. I knew they tested all of their food, you could check your specific bag on their site and even held back on distributing food for 3 to 4 days. I'm wondering why none of their samples came back contaminated but the one from the FDA did. Do you know how they test? It is multiple bags? Do they sample from a vat of food? I guess I have questions :confused:

Bless her heart. I really hope as LA continues to grow we can add more food selection for babies like this. I am excited to see where the company goes. :)

I wish i was not so scared to homecook and did not work as I would prefer to do that. I would even hire someone to cook for mine if I could find someone to do so as this all scares me so much :(

I bought a bag of dex food from vet purina ha and it had RAT POOP in it - DISGUSTING. The food is like corn pops and there was this hard poop in there that was brown with gray hairs sticking out of it. I returned it to vet and it was like no big deal. Called Nestle as they make this and they sent me COUPONS for more food - GREAT. I am stuck as it has kept dex from getting sick for 4 years as he cost me 10k over a year so too scared to do anything else :(

Bummer! My dogs are thriving on Natural Balance Ultra Premium Original, and I think I will continue for now. (Plus partial home cooking)

Only certain varieties and sizes, are affected, and not in my state anyway. I am always thinking of what I'd switch to if I had to though.

Sick of recalls!
 
I am so tired of the recalls. I feed home cooked and this is why. I am just tired of this. After hearing about this one, I learned within a day or two about the iam's recall on cat food!

I guess I'll continue to spend my weekends roasting chickens and pressure cooking chick pea, making pots of rice that are bigger than a small caribbean island, and microwaving yams.

Really, home cooking is a breeze. LOL ;)

Need recipe for 4 1/2 month old Yorkie
 
I just acquired a 4 1/2 month old Yorkie, Tank. I home cook for my Maltese because he has MVD which is a liver abnormality and needs a low-fat, low protein diet.

I am considering home cooking for Tank as well but would like a proven recipe and since you have been homecooking for your Yorkie, could you share your recipes with me?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news: NB Ultra contains salmon meal & they have confirmed that their fish is treated w/ethoxyquin before being transported to the plant. It's the 5th ingredient & is in meal form, so it's content doesn't make the bulk of the food. But it still is treated w/a pesticide...

I'm doing a mixture of a little bit of Natural Balance and homemade boiled chicken, carrots, and peas. I love Natural Balance because it doesn't contain fillers, and I hate to hear about this recall. I try to mix a little bit of dog food to ensure she is getting the essential nutrients formulated for dogs, but I'm so tired of even the reputable brands having recalls. Please keep threading and please keep me updated if any more recalls happen on this. Khloe doesn't eat the Sweet Potato and Chicken (thank goodness). Does Natural Balance have a site where they will publicly announce up to the minute recalls when they happen? I bet not, but is there a second source site that follows recalls on dog food fairly close?

In Natural Balance's defense, I want to be loyal to the company because thus far, it has been the only food that has eliminated Khloe's tear stains. Fillers in dog food is the #1 culprit for tear stains (or at least that is what I was told, and it must be true because it helped Khloe, even with her teething).

I believe it was a few states. Check the recall on NB's site and, this was back several weeks ago, first post was 6/18, so most/all of the bags with the specific date and locations should have been taken back by now. I do not know if any pet food company has an "up to the minute" recall site. Alas, most are reluctant to announce a recall until directed to by USDA/FDA or whoever does the pushing from the Fed ranks. All we can do is try to keep alert and invest any rumor(s). The "Truth about Pet Food" web site is usually on top of pet food issues. You may want to take a look at Thixton's site.

Thank you for letting me know the other sites to check for recalls; I appreciate it and will be checking out those other sites now before buying other bags and treats. I've seen this thread for about a week now, and the pet store that I always purchase it from ensured me that they didn't receive any bags that were recalled or they would have pulled it immediately. I would love to move to 100% dry dog food with the extra precautions that I'm having to take with Khloe's teeth; she is still a baby and hates brushing her teeth.

Consequently, I'm starting to see a trend that nothing is good for you or your pet [I'm seeing the same trend in nutritionist debates over the human diet and in our pets' diet]. So I do the best I can do with the knowledge that I am given for my family and Furbaby alike. Thank you again for the information, and enjoy your weekend!

I feed Bil-Jac never been on a recall list, its a great food as well my vet aproves of it you can find it at petsmart or petco been around for a long time as well. Just thought you might like to know since you live only one hour from me. Blessings:)

Thank you for sharing; I will check it out next time I am at Petsmart or Petco. If you are ever in the Concord Mills area, Pets and Company is a great privately owned pet supplies store (it's down the street from Lowe's). They are easy to talk to and really helpful on their products. I went there concerned about the samples that I got of NB, and they said that they haven't had any recalls, and they would immediately pull any recalls and notify customers that have purchased it within the last 60 days, which is nice. (:

It's so hard to commit to a food with a 3 month old puppy; so many choices! We ended up using the sample packages to mix with the homemade stuff that I prep for her. I would love to commit to 100% dry dog food because I know the pains we go through to brush her teeth every evening, but it's nice to have some fabulous people with great recommendations on here. I will definitely be in the market for more dog food in the next two weeks, so I will look at the Bil-Jac. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and thanks again.
