I know this is a bit off the airline subject, but just wanted to give you a reason why some places might ask for a pet rent. The pet rent is there to help the owners pay for the extra insurance rates for having an "extra liability" in their building, and is usually small (typically way under $100/month, the average in my area is $25/a month). You have to remember that not everyone sees puppies the way we do, as part of the family. To insurance adjusters they're an extra liability because they might:
1) Fight against other dogs, risking a lawsuit to the owner for allowing vicious animals inside the building and potentially putting people in harms way
2) Cause damages to the outside of the rental unit that is not covered by a pet deposit (since it's outside)
3) Be a cause for unsanitary conditions. (like attracting rats) Owner either spends extra time making sure everything is sanitary for people, or they hire someone to do so. Unfortunately, not everyone picks up after their pets.
4) Some Owners pay certain utilities, like water. Dogs take drink water and take baths too!!

I know there's more but I can't think of them right now, and I know for sure the insurance thing is the #1 reason for an increase in fees.
I know these rules sound ridiculous, or at times extreme, but what everyone should keep in mind is that not all pet owners take the time to properly train, clean after, or socialize their pets which may cause a problem. Owners of rental properties can't just assume that everything will turn out ok, they have to protect themselves and the rest of their tenants from a potential worst case scenario. I found all of this out while researching potentially making the apartment building my dad manages pet friendly to attract tenants. There was more to it than I thought of!!

Actually that's exactly what it means!! Most pet deposits are non-refunable for that reason. We can't always control all the mischief they get into now can we?:D

Guess what...all airlines have similar policies. It's life.

I travel a lot for my job and literally on a flight every week. I did notice a lot more pets flying. I have 3 furbabies and have never flown them on a plane. I saw a dog on first class last month. I am wondering how much that cost her owner or is it free if you fly first class since they already over charge you anyway.

I fly with lola on Continental about 1X a month. Although it kills me I pay the $125 each way even though it is sometimes more than my ticket. I have not paid in the past but once was stopped at security asking for her boarding pass and have decided to pay from now on.
I know it is only a way for them to make $$$ but I have no choice and just have to pay.

The most ridiculous part to me is that you paid $44 for your ticket. How well do you expect the pilot and crew of the plane you're risking your and your dog's lives with to be trained and paid? Bet you paid more for parking.

well arent you rude. Its called web specials. and the destination that i go to is not very popular. its a brand new route so yes it did cost me 44 dollars each way and airtran is a very well known airline. so yes i do trust them flying me and my dog no matter what the cost is. this thread was to talk about the issues with pets on airplanes. not to criticize. if u have nothing nice to say, then dont say anything at all. nobody cares about ur snooty remarks.

I don't agree with the author though, when they say:

I know same of u will get upset at me, but I'm a Ret Flight Attend flew for 25 years.
The reason AirLines charge for your pets is because they don't want all these pets in the cabin with passengers that have allergy to pets. That is why they limited pets in the cabin.
Now I , do not like pet's being shipped in the cargo area, it's not nice there and at 36,000 feet it's very cold. But people do it, It's not too bad when the animals r larger, but not small animals, than we r surpise and upset when Our furbaby die in cargo !!! I will nerve do it, but that up to u to take a change.
Also when your pet is very small some passegers will put more than 2 in a
carry on , which is not good for the poor pets, cause they need to be able to stand and turn around in their carry on.
They tell u Not To Take Your Pet out of the carry on , My God u can announce this in different language, I speak 3, and they still do it. Please I love my furbabies they sleep with me by choice, But their r people with very bad allergy which they can't control , but can die, Yes people do Die:(. I had a little boy bring a white mice on board , Chicago to Dever, flight 1/2 way there , he and his family r on the floor looking for his mice, well quess what , when we landed , we had to ground that plane , Why? because mice bite electice wirer, and if that mice was not found that plane isn't going anywhere, airlines don't have a plane avaiable all the time, sometime we get luckly, a 777 which hold over 300 hundred passager, and was now going oversea. So those poor passager were delay.:thumbdown Until they found another plane that can hold 300 + pass.
Not that our furbabies would do this , but they need to have same control.
They need to know what's on that plane all the time, and if u know u need to paid a fee, than follow the rules. If u don't want to pay the fee, than the pet don't fly, I'm sorry from the bottom of my heart:confused:, I also pay a fee for my pet to fly with me in the cabin. I have seen people pull their pets on their laps and than get upset if u say any thing to them.
There r diffen fee on diffen airline , do your research before you book your flight.

Your post was very informative! I'm sure a lot of flight attendants could add their own war stories about pets and their owners, not that anyone on this site would be the subject....;) I'm a new morkie owner, and I travel fairly often. I can see why people want to bring their pets along, but I'm hesitant to try it.

You should fly with him/her if u want, I always do, but please don't give them any meds for flying , he/her will b fine. If u can u should start when they r young, get it use to riding in your car , so they won't get car/air sick. And take a extra blanket and cover it while it's on the floor in front of u, it's cooler on the floor, just make sure they get some air but u block some of the noise.. u can also put a little cotton ball in the ear and removed as soon as u land. I have flow with my and the passenger next to me , didn't even know I had a pet with me, I think they think, I'm nuts I'm talking to myself and making funny noise Lol !!:p
What I do is try to get a seat by the window, and on take off and landing, I put my hand in the carrier on the floor and rub him or her and it works, but please never take it out. If u see that they r sleeping leave it alone.
