[News] Oprah adopts puppy from shelter Oprah adopts puppy from shelter SF Dogs Examiner: Oprah adopts puppy from shelter March 5, 8:53 AM Oprah is known to change people's lives by showing them a better way to live. This week, Oprah herself has made a change in the way she finds her canine family members. Instead of buying a new puppy, she adopted one instead. Usmagazine.com reports that Oprah and her longtime boyfriend Steadman Graham visited PAWS, a non-profit animal shelter in Chicago. From a litter of six cocker spaniels, Oprah chose a blond female named Amanda. During the past year, the Oprah show opened the public's eyes to the horrors of puppy mills. These " dog factories" churn out millions of so-called pure bred puppies each year to be sold in pet stores around the country. The female "breeders" are dogs whose lives are spent in outdoor, wire cages, living in extreme weather conditions, with little or no veterinary care, forced to produce litter after litter until their bodies stop functioning. Puppy milled dogs are often sick with genetic defects and other diseases. But the sellers know that once a consumer purchases these defective dogs, chances are the "merchandise" won't be returned for a refund since hearts would be broken. The Humane Society of the United States has a pledge consumers can take to staunchly oppose the breeding and selling of puppy milled dogs. Oprah appears to have taken the pledge. Won't you? HSUS Pledge to Stop Puppy Mills I will do my part to help stop puppy mills. I pledge to help end this cycle of cruelty by: • Choosing not to buy my next pet from a pet store or Internet site • Refusing to buy supplies from any pet store or Internet site that sells puppies. Next week I will feature a story about a woman who has dedicated her life to ending the sales of puppy milled dogs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Darlena King is motivated by compassion and will stop at nothing to save lives and end suffering. Stay tuned! |
Good for her. Lucky little Amanda will live the life of luxury. At least she is practicing what she preaches. I hope she has gotten across to thousands what a puppymill is. |
Opray's adopts How wonderful is that story, I just love Opray, she does so much good for people and now pets. This little dog deserves all the happines she gets, and I know she will live a wonderful life, not just because what Opray has, but what she gives. She is a dream come true for Amanda. Thanks Opray. |
Oprah Adopts a Puppy! Oprah Adopts a Puppy! Tuesday March 3, 2009 News - Oprah Adopts a Puppy! | Usmagazine.com Oprah Winfrey has a new puppy! The talk show host and her longtime beau, Stedman Graham, adopted an 8-week-old blonde-colored cocker spaniel on Sunday, the rep for PAWS Chicago shelter, Lisa Nowak, confirms to Usmagazine.com. "[The dog] is really cute," Nowak tells Us. "Oprah saw her and fell in love with her! She was very excited." The pup -- one of a litter of six -- was named Amanda by shelter staff, but Nowak isn't sure if Winfrey renamed her. Winfrey's two cocker spaniels, Sophie and Solomon, died last year. Her golden retriever, Gracie, choked to death on a plastic ball in 2007. She still has two golden retrievers, Luke and Layla. The host vowed to adopt her next pooch after dedicating a show to puppy mill horrors. She also donated money in Sophie's name for a room at PAWS Chicago. "She's very supportive," Nowak says. "It's great to have her in." |
What a cute pup. I watched today and Oprah named the dog "Sadie". She is a blonde purebred Cocker Spaniel. They had her 3 brothers on too who are also up for adoption and Oprah made a comment that if she wanted one of the brothers she needed to chose one that day. I have a feeling she might adopt one more. Does this pup have any clue as to what an awesome family she has become a part of? |
I saw the show today and what cute puppies!! |
Wish I could have seen them. Good for Oprah :thumbup: |
Congrats to Oprah, she leads by example.:) |
What I found interesting is that the dogs still had their tails and I would love to know how PAWS got their hands on purebred Cockers at such a young age..would love to know the history of these puppies...they were adorable and it will be fun to watch them grow up with a full tail! |
I saw that she had new new puppy and his litter mates on as well. They adorable. She donated to build a room in memory of her Sophie. :) She will show a better way! Hooray for Oprah!!!! :) |
Oprah's pup dies of parvo I don't know if this is true but here are 2 of many stories on the internet that one of the pups has died of parvo and the other is fighting to live ... caveat :: OPRAH'S RESCUED PUPPY DIES OF PARVO Oprah Winfrey adopts a dog from PAWS Chicago shelter! |
Wow!!!...If that story in your link is true..:thumbdown:thumbdown And $9,000,000 for a 20 dog shelter?? I have a feeling that, if true, this isn't the last we'll hear of it. |

I too Googled around and was not able to find anything that supports this claim that her puppies had PARVO and one has died. The only thing that I am finding is a lot of propaganda regarding the proposed vote by the Chicago city counsel regarding the mandatory spay/neuter of pets in Chicago. It sounds like a lot of smoke and I really don't see a fire. What is really sad about this story is that people who might be considering adopting from the PAWS shelter in Chicago will now become leary to help some of the needy animals living in this shelter while this man sits back to laugh. This is just one of the things that I found him spouting about Oprah on his blog: Oprah After Breeders Says American Sporting Dog Alliance |
I got a couple of e-mails from reputable people/clubs that said that Ivan died of Parvo and Sadie is sick but her outcome is not known at this time. Sad.:( |
IF these pups had Parvo, it is the fault of the jerks who left them in a position to be homeless in the first place, NOT the fault of the shelter. Shelters have to deal with Parvo all of the time with puppies that are brought to them. That is not something new. |

I don't know if this adds anything to the story or not, but here's a post from the supposed breeder of the dog ... By Angela on March 8, 2009 6:10 PM Hi, Oprah's pup is one of my 11 cocker spaniels from a litter that my new dog Lizzy Ann had. I took in Lizzy Ann on the day of my mother's memorial service last November and found out a week after I got home she was pregnant. For the full story check out my myspace blog - Angela Brown | MySpace.com I am so glad Cockers are being recognized as a breed that fills shelters all over this country - so, no need for breeding too many more. Angela This post came from this site Oprah Winfrey adopts a dog from PAWS Chicago shelter! |

Ok there might be some guy that says By Matthew Thompson on March 13, 2009 10:03 PM Yep and now the pup has DIED of parvo, and the 2nd pup is barely alive. Guess that 9mil bucks for PAWS didn't include how to properly quarantine pups prior to adoption. but what does any of this prove? There is still no reputable source that says any puppies have died. in Oprah's care from Parvo. Just a knock against PAWS for not quarantining dogs long enough. I still say all of this is just a an attempt to scare people from adopting dogs because breeders are mad that their "right" to breed will be jeopardized. If you read the link that I posted the only person that this announcement can be traced back to says he wants to take people down and he mentions Oprah in particular. So that alone tells me a lot right there. Until I hear otherwise I will continue to question this entire story. |
Please don't mis-understand....I didn't claim that there was anything to it. I just found the post and was called to dinner before I could read the myspace link. I went to it after dinner and found that there seems to be a blog entry about it but, since I'm not registered there, I couldn't view it. I'm like everyone else...looking to find a reputable source for info and so far there doesn't seem to be any. As I posted earlier, this story is either true or not. I expect in the next day or so we'll know, one way or the other. |
Again...WHY would a litter of puppies BE in a shelter anyway? If she went to a shelter to adopt and the puppy had Parvo chances are it had it before it arrived...or it got it there BUT that is also not the fault of the shelter....they cannot quarantine every single dog that is turned in...those who think so need to work in a shelter for a while. I say blame the fools that bred the mother with obviously NO plan in place for the litter of puppies. No way should a litter of puppies end up in a shelter. |
