They need to know we are MAD and want these people punished to the maximum extent of the law. Ninety-three Yorkshire terriers and two cockatiels were rescued Friday from an unlicensed breeding center near Springfield, the Humane Society of Missouri said.

The animals arrived in three vans at the society's office at 1201 Macklind Avenue in St. Louis on Friday evening after being removed from the center near Pleasant Hope, Mo. That center had been in business for four years, said Jeane Jae, a Humane Society spokeswoman.

Tim Rickey, director of the society's Animal Cruelty Task Force, described the conditions the dogs were living in as the "most horrible conditions I've ever seen."

None of the animals had food or water and some lived in filth that was 4 inches thick. The dogs' fur was dirty, overgrown and matted, some so badly the animals couldn't even move, he said. Some of the dogs were limping, which could be the result of living in cages with mesh bottoms that don't properly support their small paws.

"That is years of neglect," he said.

The dogs varied in age and some will be ready for adoption in 30 days, Rickey said, although some will need further treatment. Veterinarians and other staff were at the Macklind office on Friday examining and treating the dogs.

Rickey urged people considering buying a dog to insist upon seeing where dogs are kept before purchasing one and to report animal abuse.

He was optimistic that most of the dogs can be successfully treated and adopted.

"Our goal is to give them a second chance," Rickey said. "That's what it's all about."

I really wonder what happens to these poor babies vision. When they have that much hair hanging in front of their eyes for that long - would that make them loose their vision?? Or lessen it? Does anyone know?

Yes I would think that their eyesight would be jeopardized. I can only speak of our rescue but when his hair was cut he had eye infection in both of them. When he would be outside he had to keep his eyes closed because the light was too strong. Now over three years later he is going blind. I sent an e-mail to Mr. Moore (prosecuting attorney) in Greene county. It certainly can't hurt. Just makes me sick!:animal-pa

Last year I was diagnosed with cancer, I am now cancer free however the after effects will have me home for the next 6-8 months and after I will work from home, being sick and a bit week I would love to have a yorkie, I have heard that they make wonderful pets and are very loyal. Due to alot of pelvic radiation I cant have a large dog or one that will pull on a leash, I do take daily walks but I am need to rest some too. My daugthers are older and have thier own lives now and I feel this is the best time to have a companion. If anyone knows of anyone looking to rehome a yorkie in Massachusetts please message me here. Again I am not looking for a freebee I would just really prefer to rescue a pet.
