[News] Oprah's Update on Puppymills Today on Oprah: The Tiniest Dog in the World Meet the tiniest and most talented dogs in the world! They came from all over…you've never seen anything like this! Then, a puppy mills update. Our first show was just the tip of the iceberg…why we need you again. OAD (09/25/08) (PG) Here is the link to her page: The Oprah Winfrey Show - Watch, Read and Be on the Show |
I thought it was a very good show today and from what was said, they are making headway on puppymills. But as Oprah pointed out, it's just the tip of the iceberg. They also said, sales are down in pet shops :cheer: I loved Boo Boo! |
The show was good. That tiny baby was so adorable |
I also thought the show was good. I am glad to hear the sales in petshops are down! I was happy to hear that they were able to close mentioned puppymills. What makes me very happy that the message got across to different countries as well! |
I teared up BIG TIME when I saw the puppy mill rescues - OMG - just appalling, as usual. No matter how many times you see puppy mill footage, it kills you every time - it's beyond heartbreaking. And even though some things have been achieved, I think what hurts me is the knowledge that, here we are, STILL just at the tip of the iceberg. I mean, I've been involved with animal welfare for 20 years now and feel that we've always been....just at the tip of the iceberg....and it's sad. :( I want to SEE more progress in my lifetime! |

Darn it I meant to record it and forgot.:( Ann I think with the internet the issues can be shown on a wide scale, updated basis so much easier now than ever. Maybe we're at a turning point finally? I hope so. Do you know where I used to have to get my information as a teenager (and I'm sure since we're close in age you know)? Surfer magazine and GreenPeace newsletters. That was it! |

I was just reading your siggie quote - and it's the "indifference" stuff that still bothers me in this day and age - that there is STILL so much indifference to the plight of animals. I mean, I know we've made progress - but when I hear on Oprah that we're *still* just at the tip of the iceberg, I'm just...a little sad. Just here in AZ, our shelter takes in 60,000 animals a YEAR :(...and I wish it was different. Ugh, I think I'm just feeling emotional from seeing the Oprah footage - and wish we were further along. But, I DO need to realize there has been progress. :) |
I think with the influence Oprah has she will make a difference. I think her being behind any cause is a real benefit! So many people watch her show and respect her. You can see how much she loves dogs. I am very grateful to her for bringing national attention to this cause! |
I watched was good:thumbup: |
was a great show and i am happy to hear that the sales for pet shops are down! Hopefully they will continue to decline, since Oprah is bringing this to light it should get the news around faster as so many people look up to her and respect her. I was a little upset though when that lady in the audience says she keeps her dogs in the garage because she doesnt have time for them :thumbdown:mad: |
I'm sorry I missed it! I have a lot of respect for Oprah for doing a follow up. Too many "news" outlets do one story for shock value and never follow up or tell what you can do to help. I too have heard (outside of Oprah) that petshops, puppymillers and BYBs are having trouble moving "product." I wonder if people are just not buying dogs b/c of the economy, or if they really are choosing to adopt or go to good breeders. Either way, it's nice to hear those that take advantage of animals are suffering financially. Because politicians are so indifferent, clueless and/or corrupt, education is the best tool we have. Most of the legislation that deals with puppymills and bybs, have built in loopholes for USDA breeders. As long as these "breeders" can make a profit, they will find ways to get around animal welfare laws. Surprisingly, puppymillers are quite organized and have their own lobbyist. Also, I'm sad to say in the "heartland" many are seen as struggleing farmers and get a lot of support from their representatives. One thing a lot of people don't know is that the puppymill is a creation of our goverment. They encouraged farmers to switch to dog breeding after WWII b/c it was a good "cash crop." One the first puppymill show, I remember seeing one of the rescue dogs and thinking, that is one pathetic looking Chinese Crested. I too, teared up when they brought the dog out and it was a Maltese! He looked so much like my Bailey it made me feel sick. When they rescued this poor dog he had little to no hair and a few rotten teeth. His previous owner should be shot for treating him that way. |

Animal abuse? Whammo! Same thing! Animal swiftly removed and the person commiting the act of abuse will be abused, just as they abused their pet! Same for children and the elderly!! Oh I can\'t wait to be Queen! :D |
Darn I missed it.. I hate that you can\'t watch past episodes of her show online! I did see the preview clip of Maggie who can do math....too cute! |
Her show was excellent today... I watched the show and really thought it was good. I was glad that she updated the Puppymill info, and was glad that they also told of the Amish farmer here who shot 80 dogs and nothing was done to him!!! NOTHING!!!! I had previously written to Gov. Rendell when it was first reported in our paper and on T.V. He wrote back and urged me to sign a petition on the comp. to put a stop to Puppymills!!! I did and was glad to see it on the Oprah show. She truly loves animals like the rest of us and truly wants to help!! Hopefully everyone watching that show will go to her website and find out what they can do to help. Unfortunatly, Like Oprah said it was just the tip of the "Iceberg"!!! But, If we keep making noise someone is going to hear us and help all those poor animals in Puppymills!!! Spread the word that Puppymills and buying puppies @ petshops and from brokers is wrong!! Only buy from Reputable Breeders who are happy to answer your ??\'s and tell you all you want to know about their dogs!! Blessings to all those poor dogs that are still in Puppymills....:aimeeyork Baron\'s Mom |
Darn, I really wanted to see these 2 Oprah\'s, but now that I live in England the Oprah\'s that we get here are about 5 months old :( Does anyone know if there is somewhere online that I can watch the show? |
