How many mg's a day of Prednisone does your pup take? I was just curious on how prednisone the pups on here are taking. Toby's been on Prednisone for about 8 years. It started at 5mg a day when he was sick and weaned it all the way down to 2.5mg every other day. Then when he got sick in June again he is back up to 2.5mg everyday. The vet said that he will be taking that much for the rest of his life. |
My pom takes 2.5 every other day for her liver disease. She has been on it for 6 weeks. She started at 10 mg then weaned down to 2.5. She will have another blood test in a week or so and them I will find out how much and how long she will be on it. What is your's taking it for? Has he had any side effects from long term use of it? Maya is starving all the time. |
Toby had a wierd problem where his protein was leaking out of his system into his belly. So he has been on prednisone ever since to keep that from happening. They had to drain him since he had so much fluid. He had trouble breathing. |
Oh about the side effects. He has cataracts now but he is 16 so I don't know if its his age or from the Prednisone. |
Thanks I was worried about long term effects bit Maya is already 10 1/2 so it sounds like they can stay on it for a long time with few side effects |
dcapper, i've seen a sheltie with a similar problem. She is suppose to be on pred every day but her owner doesn't like to keep her on it because he thinks its is doing harm to her. HOWEVER, he's the one doing the damage by taking her off it all the time. Instead of her protein draining into her belly it drains into her chest. She used to come in once every couple months to get her chest taped but now she's been coming in more frequently because her dad keeps stopping the meds :( its very sad. she gets so uncomfortable and can't breath because the fluid is compressing her lungs. Pred is a very useful drug in controlling problems like this. it does more good then harm if you can get them to the lowest dosage that works. i've seen many dogs live long happy lives for many many years on pred with no other problems. :) good luck to you guys |
I agree Kalina82. I wouldn't have Toby without it, he would have passed a long time ago. He's 16 with cataracts. I'll take cataracts over death. I think everyone would. |

Its been a while since I posted on this. I was wondering if ne1 has noticed any side effects with the long term use of Prednisone. Toby is doing awesome and is in incredible shape. He has been taking 2.5mg Prednisone for almost a year and before that 2.5mg every other day. Being 16 now I figured the long term effects would have kicked in, but there has been none at all that the vet can see. He just keeps on ticking! |
Lady has been taking 2.5 mg every other day for about four years now for her arthritis. She was just diagnosed with Iatrogenic Cushings which is a side effect. Steroids can also cause diabetes. While there are many benefits to short term steroid therapy, the long term side effects should be very carefully weighed and other alternatives used whenever possible. |
