Scabs on neck and spine My yorkie, Guppy the Puppy, has some scabs on his spine. No fleas, he and my golden retriever are both on Sentinel and Advantage. Bailey has no problems, but just this past month I noticed a large red area on Guppy's back. I cleaned it and it started getting a bit "crusty" so I took him into the vet. He checked for fleas but found none. Feels this is some type of dermatitis and is treating with Malaseb shampoo and Genesis spray plus oral prednisone. But the large area seems to be healing, but now the scabs seem to be spreading up his spine to his shoulder blades. Doesn't seem to be itchy. Anyone else have experience with this? |
See if your vet will do a skin scrapping. My golden has manage for a month or so. I could not get an appt. for the two vets in the practice I like so Lucky show the third one. He said it was dermatisis and have me give Lucky the same treatment as you described. After back and forth between me and this idiot vet I finally show one of my regular vets who said he had mange. Lucky started to improve within a day or two with proper treatment. |
I think it might be mange also |
Thanks for the reply. I spoke in length today with the vet and he said it's a staph infection. I just don't understand how it's spreading the way it is, so I'm going to do some more research. Treatment right now is: Malaseb Shampoo and Spray, Genesis Spray and oral medrol. Seems a big better today, so I hope we're on the right track. I checked into mange and he's not losing his hair in any areas and doesn't seem to be itching or biting at himself...just these little "scabby" areas all along the spine. Very strange as you would think they are bites, and at first I thought they were fleas, but they did some scrapes and tooks some samples of hair from the area and now bugs. Has anyone dealt with this before? I have him groomed and bathed every month and both dogs are up to date with all their shots, checkups and dual flea control. The other dog has no signs of any problems. |
scabs on back I took my dog to the vet today for his bordatella shot, and the assistant found some scabs on my dogs back. I noticed a little bump on his spine before, but didn't think much of it. The vet took a flea comb and combed it. Tiny little black things were in the comb. When the vet spread his hair on his spine, you could see tiny little scabs. Anyway, we are keeping an eye on it. If it gets worse I will have to shampoo him with this special medicated shampoo. God, I hope it doesn't get worse. Said it could be dermatitis, or allergies. |
Yes, that's exactly what Guppy has and I'm probably using the same shampoo he's talking about. I will say, keep a close eye on it as it can get out of control quickly. I, at first, thought he had gotten fleas from boarding a couple weeks ago. When I saw the little scabs I thought they were fleas so I gave him a flea bath and had the vet switch to a more aggressive flea control (I've always just used Sentinal on both my dogs and have never seen a flea on either). A few days later I noticed a large white spot on Guppy's back about the size of a dime. His hair's so long I didn't really see it at first...just caught a glimpse when he was running of something white. It was crusty around the edge. By the next morning, when I took him to the vet it was already the size of a quarter! Anyway, the combo of medications he's on seems to be working. If anyone else has any thoughts, please let me know! |
scabs I'm definately going to keep a close eye on it. I'm so glad my neighbor, who is a vet assistant discovered it. I thought it was justs a little bump. Is the medicine and shampoo you have to use real expensive? |
I think they were about $20 each. I gave Guppy a nice long bath last night and worked most of the "scabs" off him with warm water after applying the shampoo and allowing it to sit for 10 minutes as instructed. Today there is a definite improvement. I think it's imperative with this to keep up with the treatments religiously until the problem is solved. It seems that any lapse at all allows the problem to escalate again quickly. Here's a pretty good site, although a bit technical, that describes the various skin disorders if your interested in further reading: http://lowchensaustralia.com/health/bacterial.htm |
scabs Thanks, I'll check it out. |
