Long Term Users of Raw Diet I was wondering is there ANYONE out there who has been feeding the raw diet in the long term? Specifically for ten or more years? I can certainly understand the benefits of this diet in the short term, but I'm worried about the long term affects. Any information anyone has from this angle will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. |
Join this group, there are members on there who have been successfully feeding RAW to their dogs for over 20 years http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/. |
I think it is a very good diet, however, you need to make sure the dog gets a full and adequate daily nutrient level in. I feed my Pom cooked and raw. When the yorkie settles in I will switch him to it as well, but for now will let him take his time and finish his food he came with and slowly bring him to the cooked and raw. |

soccbydo - I know this is off topic here, but I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through with your new baby. But, hang in there,... he's still young enough to be trained. He's a beauty. |
Raw Diet for 5 1/2 years and going strong! Haven't used a raw diet for ten years yet, but have for five and a half years with my 4 pound Yorkie, Zoe -- introduced it gradually as soon as we brought her home at 8 weeks. She has *all* her teeth and has been extremely healthy. Her brother, who is owned by someone else, has lost all of his teeth already, so we're pretty happy with it so far. We try to alternate two or more different brands -- mostly Primal Nuggets and Nature's Variety to be sure to get as many nutrients as possible, but we have also used Halshan and have had great results. We have to be careful of brands that have bone pieces that are too large. She gets a small Wysong Anergen snack between her two meals daily, but otherwise it's raw all the way. She makes sure that we don't forget! |

Thanks for sharing this information with me. Have you always fed the pre-mixed diet and do you add supplements? Do we have to worry about large bone pieces in the pre-mixed? Quote:

I just started Morgan on raw back in april and so far she's doing great. I also feed most pre-made right now (nature's Variety, AFS, primal). I give cod liver oil and a joint supplement because she has LPs. If you choose a prey-model raw diet they don't need supplements because everything they need is in the food. |
Lacy has been on a raw diet for almost a year and a half now and has done great on it. I also give her Juice Plus for Dogs as a supplement and fish oil/vitamin E. I feed Nature's Variety raw medallions. She just had a full blood work-up done a month ago and everything looked great! |
How do you keep them clean??? I am very interested about this but I am concerned about having raw chicken on their hair:confused: |

they don't really get anything in their hair. i usually wipe off morgan's face with a wash cloth or baby wipe when she's don't tho if she's been particularly messy after a meal. |
