Perscription Diet Bella has an itchy rash below her nose, and she has been chewing on her paws like crazy. This has been going on for months. I have changed her food several times (canidae, timberwolf, evo etc.) and nothing seems to help. Now the vet wants to put her on either Hills ZD or Purina HA. The ingredients in these foods seem like crap compared to what she has been eating. Help!!! Does anyone have any experience with Perscription diets or other hypoallergenic foods??? |
Have you tried California Naturals? Each food has one protein source and one grain source. Yes, the ingredients in all Purina and SD products are garbage.:) |
I have my guys on a hypoallergenic diet, but it's homecooked. You could try Wellness kibble - they make single protein/single carb foods: http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com/well...ons_index.html For now, I'd stay away from chicken as a meat source entirely. The nutritionist I use for my Marcel has this cool looking product for allergies, check it out: http://www.askariel.com/pages.asp?pid=allergies (click on ProAller, that's the one I'm thinking of). Allergies are so frustrating, but if you can truly put her on an elimination diet with some supplements, you just might be able to get to the bottom of it. |
I haven't tried California Naturals. Do you think it's better for allergies than the foods I have tried? I think Timberwolf was a fish based protien. |

I keep her on each food for at least a month. I have not yet had skin scrapes done, because the vet is convinced it's allergy related since she chews on all four paws and has the symetrical redness under her nose. The vet did put her on prednisone and an antibiotic a couple of months ago, which helped short term, but the itching and redness just came right back. |
me too Our vet put us on perscription diet too and weve done it for 1 week so far. I to dont like the ingredence in these either but my vet insisted. So far no change except my pup loves the food! He hasnt eaten anything happily before this and weve done EVERYTHING including homecooking. Go figure. |
Have you ruled out environmental allergies? Grass/pollen, lawn sprays, household cleaners, etc..... Four weeks might not be enough time for her respond to a food change. The allergens can take 6-8(+) weeks to work themselves out of her system. You want to give it at least two months before deciding a food isn't going to work.... A lot of people forget to check treat ingredients. Many of the popular brands found in pet stores contain wheat, corn, soy, etc. Be sure her treats don't contain anything like that either. |
