Looking for advice on best tartar control food Hello everyone, This will be my first post. My little yorkiepoo just came back from the Vet and was advised to switch to a tartar control kibble diet. I'm looking for opinions on the absolute best product out there. If possible, something organic with all the best vitamins and mineral. Thanks in advance, Bailey |
Welcome to YorkieTalk.:) I don't think that there is one quality kibble out there (to my knowledge) that is used for tartar control. In fact, I"m not even sure kibble prevents plaque at all. My Yorkie ate mostly kibble for the first five years of her life and she has horrible teeth. My suggestion would be to brush your dog's teeth or use Petzlife Oral Gel. Ellie had nine teeth pulled in January. She was then switched to homecooked food in April. Homecooked is all soft. Ellie's vet is really big into the whole dental thing and she doesn't have a problem with the soft food so I'm not sure that you switching food will actually help but I can't be sure. Maybe start brushing instead? Of course, you should always listen to your vet first though, not me.;) |
Hi and welcome to YT!! That's a myth :) Kibble doesn't prevent plaque or keep their teeth clean. After all, crackers or cookies won't keep our teeth clean, right :) You just have to keep the dog's teeth cleaned regardless of what food he/she eats by brushing the teeth with a baby finger toothbrush or using a product like Petzlife oral gel :) |
the only tartar "prevention" diet i know of is T/D which you get from your vet. The main problem with it tho is that it causes weight gain becuase its extremely fatty. Dry food doesn't really do anything to prevent tartar build up anyway. Your best bet is to brush those teeth as often as you can. |
I didn't know dry food didn't help their teeth. I thought was why a lot of people don't feed wet. Learned something new again. |
teeth Try Hills Science diet and it is the TD and only from a vet, my one boy had very bad breath, (he is getting his teeth cleaned again this winter.) But since I tried the TD his breath is 75% better, he will still get his cleaning. But my little guy is so fussy, I told my vet he would not go for it, he only likes benny bully treats. But he absolutely loves them, when there are none in the dish, he comes and asks for some more to be put it.. They are not that small and yet are for the tiny dogs, I was concernd but they manage to eat them and they not only like them, but it is helping all their teeth... Vets will let you return if the dog will not eat them, so you have nothing to lose which is a plus. pooh's mum |
