leptospirosis vaccine Has your furbaby had the leptospirosis vaccine? My 13 wk old is scheduled to have one tomorrow, but I have been reading mixed oppinions about the vaccine online. Some say that Yorkies and small breeds can have a bad or severe reaction to it. I'm not sure if I should let him get it or not! |
I would find out if there is an outbreak around you. If there isn't an outbreak there is no way I'd get it. The shot is ineffective in up to 30% of dogs. It has a high risk of side effects. It also lasts for 6-8 months usually. That would mean if you want to vaccinate for it the only way to be sure that your dog is protected is to get it every 6 months. My Yorkie reacted to this vaccine. We brought her home and 1/2 hour after the shot she threw up, collapsed and went into shock. Please be careful if you do give it. Don't go to far away from the vets if you give it for atleast an hour or better yet discuss not giving it at all with your vet. This vaccine is really beginning to raise questions with a lot of experts... |

No way here! No lepto for my babies. It's a vax that is rarely necessary and notorious for reactions. |
I left a vet we'd used for 10 years, because she didn't tell me (or, didn't know) that small breeds should NOT have this vaccine. While interviewing other vets, the one I went with told me smaller breeds should not have the vaccine (risk factor higher than the risk of actually coming in contact with the virus). She basically reinforced this quote from this pdf file: Quote:

We dont' get that one or the corona one either. Both are too chancy to me, at least. |
I do not give mine the lepto. |
Mine had it with no reactions. There was an outbreak in our area so the vet insisted on it |
It is pretty prevalent in Indiana and my Vet didn't think it was worth taking a chance to go without it. My four have never had a problem with it at all. |
Zoe's breeder told us to never give Lepto. |
My zoey got sick (vomited) and panting. She was groggy for 3 days after. I would not do it again. |
We NEVER give Lepto to our yorkies or the outside Beagles. No way and if I had a vet that insisted, I would find another vet. |
Both the vet I used to have and my new vet do not give the lepto. |
As a breeder I have it written in my contract that the vaccine should not be given.....Adverse reaction in yorkies, with the prevelant one being death. |
