Feeding Schedules When my babes were young, I fed twice a day, leaving food for about 20 min. They are now almost 1-1/2 and 2 years and I leave dry food out all day. Fresh water is a must all of the time. |

If I were you, I would run a bile acid test on him just to check...Dogs with liver problems typically don't like to eat often and one of the symptoms is UTI or urination problems. That's one of the ways we found out about Miko. They thought he had a UTI but couldn't find a bacteria. The problem went away with antibiotics but then came back later on and it turned out that he had bladder stones/crystals that were causing his problems. We had him bile acid tested and found that he had liver problems.... I would never restrict water intake...In fact, my vet says to have water available for him at ALL times and to make sure that he has access to "bathroom" usage at any time, so we use puppy pads. If it weren't for the fact that he gets to drink water whenever he wants and the fact that he never has to hold his pee, he would have much more severe bladder stone issues. |

That definately sounds like something to consider. I don't know how to give him access to outside all the time. Maybe a doggie door? My dog doesn't have accidents when he is awake.Did yours? Did yours also pee while he slept? I'm talking a wet crate or cushiion everyday. My vet thinks it might have been a kidney bacteria all along and the first round of meds we didn't do long enough. If a months of meds doesn't work I'll definately have the bile test. It isn't like he never eats and he appears in every respect healthy. I'll keep an eye out for sure. Thanks |
I think two scheduled feeds a day is best, and I would definitely leave his water out for him 24 hours a day. They need alot of water to prevent dehydration, which can happen really fast in these small little dogs. |

I feed wet food twice a day; at around 6 am and 5 pm...I try to keep pretty close to that schedule. I don't have to worry about picking up the food; it's inhaled (1/4 cup) in less than a minute I think. I open the door as soon as I put the food down, and Max immediately after inhaling his food, runs out to do his thing. I also feed up to 1/3 cup throughout the day of his dry food (it's really more than he should be eating, but as long as he gets his exercise, he's ok)..usually some of it around 11-12 and a little around 7 or 8 pm when we're having lunch/dinner. I can't put down a dish of dry food, or it would all be gone too....Max is a VERY good eater:rolleyes: . I would never consider restricting his water intake ever....even if he had accidents; it just doesn't seem healthy. I hope your dog's problem gets figured out soon; it has to be frustrating to have him being incontinent, poor baby. |
does your dogs do well with the timberwolf, chester pooped and pooped with it |

I keep water and food down so my dogs can graze or eat as they want. I think of it this way...if I'm hungry, I go to the kitchen to get me something to eat. If I'm thirsty, I go get me something to drink. If food and water is not readily available and down all the time, how is the dog suppose to tell you when they are hungry or thirsty? They can't so we have to provide it for them. I've always been a free-feeder and my dogs are not overweight...well, maybe London is a tad (after her litter) but she's still as beautiful as ever! |
