Got a question on food! Hey everyone, My Buster has had 1 major bout with pancreatitis back in mid june of this year. Since then he has had two small attacks (better the next day). Saturday he got sick again(throwing up, listless, pacing as if he was in pain). These are all the same symptoms as his first Pancreas attack in June. My question is am I feeding him right. He is a 8 year old yorkie. I free feed Canidae dry kibble(lamb and rice)and in the evening I soak it in warm water so it will get soft. He and his sister love it and look forward to it every evening! He gets no table scraps and I discontinued all dog treats. Must be boring, I couldn't live like that! LOL... Should I talk to the vet about using famotidine for his stomach acid? I am at a loss in what to do to prevent any more attacks. Please help, I am so unsure... Vet says I am doing ok, but I still have a naging feeling there is something more that I can do. Sorry this is so long. |
Poor baby! I hope he's feeling better soon. We have a lot of yorkietalkers who know about food issues. Hopefully someone has some good advice. |

Lamb and rice, I can't remember if it for the "for all stages" or just the lamb and rice. I get rid of the bag and store the kibble in a container, but I do believe it is just the lamb and rice. Thanks |
ok well here is a fat comparison of all the types of canidae food. lamb and rice - 12.5% All life stages - 14.5% chicken and rice - 15.5% Platinum - 8.5% I know platinum is for senior and overweight dogs but since he's 8 years old and has pancreatitis the lower fat percentage would be better for him. talk to your vet about it and see what he says. 8 years old should put him at late middle age or senior so it'd be ok to switch him to this food. |
Thanks for all the good advice, I will ask the vet about the Platinum Canidae, I will also start feeding 2x a day rather than the kibble being down 24/7 and just doing the soaking of the kibble in the evening. At least this way, he can still graze between the morning and evening meal. Thanks everyone for the great support and advice, I don't know what I would do without YT forum! Lana, Buster and Sissy |
