Thinking about switching to Innova Evo Red Meat for allergies...input?
 
Does anyone here feed Innova Evo Red Meat? I know it's controversial for small dogs because of the protein content, but I have GOT to switch to SOMETHING because of Hobbs' persistent skin allergies. I have him on Natural Balance Duck & Potato now which helped Hobbs' skin a little, but it is still not what I would like it to be and he's itching constantly. So, I've considered a raw diet, which is basically feeding tons of raw protein, so I figure that the 40% or so protein in Innova Evo Red Meat would be the same in terms of protein content as a raw diet. So please don't preach to me about the protein content.

Other than that, does anyone have any input on how this food might help skin allergies??

I have no idea whether this food would help, but have you looked into California Naturals? I think it is a good food for allergies (never tried it though). I'm not saying you shouldn't use Evo though. It is an awesome brand.

Hello! The size of a dog doesn't determine whether high protein is "bad". High protein is just fine (better, in my opinion) UNLESS there is a disease state that makes high protein a no-no (liver, pancreas etc). I just reviewed the ingredients - AWESOME! The only downside is that there are quite a few different meats in there - so if he IS sensitive to one, it would hard to determine which one. Pretty clean meats though (altho beef is sometimes a problem for some dogs).

Can you get ahold of Orijen - bc they make a 6-Fish high protein kibble - a really great option for allergies. Dogs generally go bonkers for the taste. I can't speak highly enough of Orijen, as far as kibbles go.

Are you supplementing w/ flax, EFAs or anything? That might help.

That Orijen 6-Fish looks FABULOUS! Do they guarantee the use of ethoxyquin-free chemical preservatives? There are no retailers in my state, but I guess I could request some samples and if they do well on it I could just order it online.

Nevermind, I answered my own question re: ethoxyquin:

A: No. ORIJEN fish meats arrive FRESH; which means they are never frozen and have no preservatives what-so-ever. We work directly with our fish meal suppliers and pay them a premium to have ORIJEN fish meals preserved naturally with Vitamin E, Citric acid and Rosemary extract instead of the commonly used ethoxyquin preservative.

They are ethoxyquin free: http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/faq/#Ethoxyquin. Have you read their white paper, btw? FABULOUS! They have their own staff nutritionist too, how great - I actually emailed w/ him bc I had some add'l questions.

I actually got mine (when I was feeding kibble for grazing, btwn meals) from a vendor on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Orijen-dog-food-...QQcmdZViewItem but it looks like they are currently out of 6-Fish - but you can get it at online stores, did you find one :D ?

Have yah had any allergy testing done?

I was actually going to recommend looking into California Naturals too. It's a really great food for dogs with skin and coat problems-- they make single protein, single grain foods-- and because it contains a grain it hasn't got quite as much protein as EVO if that concerns you. I feed it as part of Penny's food rotation.

I feed mine California Natural because of Cali''s scratching and she still is scratching like crazy. I just don't know what to do. I have tried diet, testing, meds.
