RAW diet... I know there are a few people on here that feed raw so I am wondering how much do you feed your yorkie? How much veggies do you feed? Daily/weekly? Do you give suppliments? If so what do you recommend to be the best? Thank you in advance to anyone that can help me! |
I feed to condition, no set amount. I don't feed the same amount every day either, depends on what they have done that day. You know your dog and after a couple of weeks of raw you should be able to draw a certain idea in your head of how much they need. I feed a couple of spoonfuls of pureed fruit and veg once a week but they also get bits of fruit and veg as treats. I don't believe they need any supplements of you vary their diet enough. I just give salmon oil and natural vitamin e, the salmon oil because it seems to give their coat and skin that extra something and vit e because they use it to process the oil and i don't want them to end up low in it. |
ive heard about the vit E deficiency if given oils. ive mentioned it to other barfer's but they swore i was nuts lol. good info, i will try and make a menu and post it up when i get it all together. ps anyone know how to make sure they are getting the right calcium/phospherous ratio? Ive been saving my egg shells and I want to make it into a powder to add to her food for calcium suppliment, but I am not sure if there is a special way, like do I bake it? And how much do I give and how often? Sorry these are silly questions maybe, I just cant seem to find the right info in the net, they say to give it but dont say how much.. |
If you are feeding raw meaty bones on a daily basis then there is no need to supplement with extra calcium. |
hi and welcome to feeding raw. are you going to be feeding raw on a prey-model basis or commercial, or a little bit of both? Lara feeds on a prey-model basis. I most feed a commercial frozen raw one, honestly because i'm a little lazy. I also supplement with fish oil and a joint supplement. i do not give vit e because i was never told about it but now i will look into it. if your feeding prey-model you should be incorporating raw meaty bones in a meal almost every day and that should take care of the calcium your dog needs. feeding a true raw diet does not require you to supplement them with anything else. there is a great raw yahoo group that gives GREAT information. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/ |
first off i just want to say thanks for that link! I am assuming that commercial means the premade raw food that already have everything all together? If so, I will be doing the prey model diet. I will check out that link and see if I can find answers and learn more! |

yes that's what i meant by a commercial diet. that yahoo group is great. they can definitely help you out. I sometimes give RMB type dinners of chicken drumsticks and turkey necks. |
