Hacking and coughing Hi there. First post so I wanted to say thank you for all the helpful information on this site. My little Bean has been hacking and coughing ever since I got him. He is 4 months. He was previously owned by a friend for 2 weeks and she decided she could not handle him and her dog so I got him. She gave him all his shots including the kennel shot. He was coughing a little the first couple of days I had him and even coughed up a hair ball. Since then it has gotten progressively worse. I know they have a tendency to have collapsable tracheas, but he wakes himself up coughing so it is not when he is overly excited and I have tickled his throat and he doesn't do it. He has coughing/hacking fits for about 5 minutes and they have gotten more frequent. He seems to want to cough something up but it is just clear mucous. I took him to the vet and she prescribed an antibiotic and a steroid, but he has taken them 5 days with no improvement. Any thoughts? |
Have you let your vet know that he's not getting any better? I'd give them a call. |
I would call the vet and probably go back in as well. Some improvement should be seen after 5 days, if the antiobiotic is wide spectrum. If it is viral, the antibiotic won't do a thing. Poor baby! I'd really get him in and have them investigate further. |
if it is kennel cough.. the antibiotics won't do anything.. it is a virus.. the antibiotics are just to prevent it from developing into pneumonia. Again, if it is kennel cough it can last months. Layla had it and it lasted just over a month, i've heard of people on here who's dogs have had it for up to 3 months. The kennel cough vaccine is similar to the flu virus, it can protect against some strands, not all. Try using a humidifier by his bed at night. if you can't do that. go in the bathroom and run hot water... sit with him on the side of the tub (of course avoiding the scortching water!) and let him breathe in the steam. good luck.. kennel cough is a tough one to beat and the coughing just takes over their little bodies.. hard to watch i know.. but it will run its course and be gone :) |
